Titans Hit the Links for Big West Championships This Weekend

THIS WEEK: Coming away with its first tournament win of the year at the Winchester Classic on Apr. 19-21, the Cal State Fullerton men's golf team now sets its sight on a Big West Championship as the Titans will compete in the conference tournament in San Jacinto, Calif., on Apr. 28-30. Fullerton will compete at The Country Club at Soboba Springs as one of ten teams competing in the three-day conference tournament.

THE COURSE: The three-day event will be contested at The Country Club at Soboba Springs, playing at 7,137 yards from the tournament tees and par 72 for the 54-hole event. Play begins in the morning (7:15 a.m.) for the first round on Sunday (Apr. 28), Monday (Apr. 29, 7:15 a.m.) for the second round, and will conclude on Tuesday (Apr. 30) for the final 18 holes, starting at 7:15 a.m.

THE FIELD: Competing alongside the Titans will be squads from Cal Poly, Cal State Northridge, Long Beach State, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, Hawai'i, and Pacific.

IN THE RANKINGS: Cal State Fullerton is ranked No. 76 in the nation according to the Golfstat.com NCAA Head-to-Head rankings and enters the tournament as the third highest ranked team in the Big West: UC Davis is No. 71, UC Irvine is No. 78, Pacific is No. 94, Long Beach State is No. 101, UCSB is No. 102, Cal Poly is No. 132 Hawai'i is No. 171, UC Riverside is No. 183, Cal State Northridge is No. 233.

According to the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings, Fullerton is No. 80 in the nation and faces a field: UC Davis (#62), Pacific (#73), UC Irvine (#76), Long Beach State (#84), UC Santa Barbara (#104), Cal Poly (#123), Hawai'i (#158), UC Riverside (#190), Cal State Northridge (#225).

BIG WEST CHAMPIONSHIP: Fullerton will compete in their fourth Big West Championship as ten teams will send five golfers to compete. Last season UC Davis captured its second straight conference title. Last season Pacific's Alex Edfort won the individual award after shooting a 203 last season. Cal State Fullerton's Mark Anguiano finished second last season behind Edfort shooting a 208. The Titans had their best finish at the Big West Championship finishing third. The previous two seasons the Titans finished eighth and ninth. 

WINCHESTER CLASSIC: The Titans won their first tournament of the season shooting an overall score of 868 (+4). The Titans came into the final round in second, but shot a tournament best 286 to win the event. The Titans were led by sophomore Ryan Tetrault and junior Mark Anguiano who both shot third round 70's (-2). Tetrault entered the day tied for sixth place after shooting a second round 74, but finished fourth overall after the two-under par performance in round three. Anguiano finishes the tournament in fifth place with a total score of 215 (-1). 

After shooting a three-over par (75) in the first round, senior Dakota Duerr came back in the second round with a 71 (-1) and shot even on Sunday to finish with a total score of 218 (+2). Duerr finished the Winchester Classic tied for eighth place. Corey Gard shot a final round 74 to finish five-over par (221) and good for 15th place. Josh Park shot a final round 80, eight-over par, to finish with a final score of 230 (+13). 

FIRST TOURNAMENT WIN: The Titans came away victorious at the Winchester Classic and now have four first place finishes in the program's history since 2009. The last tiime the Titans won a tournament was last season at the Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational on Feb. 13-14, 2012. 

BEFORE BIG WEST CHAMPIONSHIP: The Winchester Classic was the last tournament of the season before Fullerton will compete at the Big West Championship this weekend. Last season the Titans finished fourth at the Anteater Invitational before competing in the Big West Championships and finishing 3rd. Fullerton finished in ninth place in 2010 at the at the Big West Championships after finishing first at the UC Riverside Dial in Moreno Valley, Calif.

FINISHING STRONG: Fullerton finished the season strong finishing second twice and recently winning the team title at the Winchester Classic. The Titans havent finished lower than fourth in a tournament in the last five tournaments. 

TEAM SCORE: The Titans shot their best team score of 868 at the Winchester Classic on April 19-21. Fullerton's best team score this season came at the Del Walker Intercollegiate on February 25-26 when the team shot a 849. 

NO PAR FOR YOU: The Titans did not have one player shoot a round at par or better in the Anteater Invitational. This was the first time all season that Fullerton did not shoot a round at par or better.

FRESHMEN COMPETING: The Titans have three freshmen on the roster this season and at least one freshman had competed in the last seven tournaments until the Winchester Classic. Redshirt Freshman Mark Jensma and true freshman Michael Choe have both competed in six tournaments this season.

YOU CAN DUERR IT: Junior Dakota Duerr leads the team with a 72.76 scoring average and had the highest individual finish this season when he finished second at the Del Walker Intercollegiate in Long Beach, Calif. on Feb. 25-26, 2013.

LOWEST TEAM SCORE: The Titans shot their lowest 54-team score at the Del Walker Intercollegiate on Feb. 25-26 with a total score of 849. Fullerton previously shot a 851 at the Firestone Grill Invitational in San Luis Obispo, Calif. on Oct. 8-9, 2012.

NEW CAREER HIGHS: Cal State Fullerton had six different athletes get new career highs in the Del Walker Intercollegiate. Multiple Titans had new career best tournament scores after two rounds.

BEST FINISH AT ANTEATER INVITATIONAL: Since the program was reinstated in 2009, the Titans have finished 10th, 11th, and 4th at the Anteater Invitational. Even though shooting +30 (894) in Laguna Niguel, Calif. the Fullerton men's golf team had their best team finish at the tournament hosted by UC Irvine after finishing second behind Long Beach State.

TAP-INS:

• Ryan Tetrault shot a career best round of 66 in the second round of the Folino Invitational. His best career round was a 68 at the Firestone Grill Invitational in the third round on Oct. 9, 2012. Tetrault also earned his best finish at the Sacramento State Collegiate on Mar. 11-12.

• Dakota Duerr posted a 68 in the second and third round during the Del Walker Intercollegiate, marking the second time a Titan has shot back-to-back rounds of 68 in a tournament (Mark Anguiano, Arizona Intercollegiate, Jan. 28-29, 2013).

• Dakota Duerr shot the lowest 54-hole individual score since the program's reinstatement, when he shot a 207 at the Del Walker Intercollegiate on Feb. 25-26.

• Duerr has finished as the best Fullerton golfer in five of ten tournaments this season. He finished tied for eighth at the Winchester Classic (+2, 218). Ryan Tetrault has finished as the best Titan golfer in three tournaments.

• Cal State Fullerton had six golfers shoot a 69 or better at the Del Walker Intercollegiate in Long Beach, Calif.

• The Titans tied their lowest team round of the 2012-13 season during the Del Walker Intercollegiate with a score of 281 on Feb. 26, 2013. (Arizona Intercollegiate 2nd Round).

• Three Titans have taken over 2,000 strokes on the season (Ryan Tetrault 2, 198; Mark Anguiano 2,187; Dakota Duerr 2,110).
