Men's Golf Second After Day Two of Big West Championships

FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton men's golf team maintained its second place position after 36 holes at the Big West Championships. The Titans shot a ten-over par (298) as a team in the second round at the Soboba Springs Country Club in San Jacinto, Calif. on Monday afternoon.

After shooting a first round five-over par (293), the Titans have an overall score of 591 (+15). Fullerton entered the second round in second place one stroke behind the University of Hawai'i. However after a second day collapse by Hawai'i (+20), Fullerton now trails the University of Pacific.

Beginning the round in fourth place, Pacific turned in the lowest team score of the day, shooting a 289 (+1) to jump into the top spot. The Tigers have a four stroke lead over the Titans and after two rounds have an overall score of 587 (+11). Defending champion UC Davis will begin the final round in third place after shooting a three-over 291 in the second round. The Aggies have an overall score of 592 (+16) and moved up two spots after starting the day in fifth place.

Cal State Fullerton's Corey Gard still holds the individual lead after shooting one-under par (71) on Monday. Gard entered the day three-under par (69) and tied for the lead with Hawai'i's Nainoa Calip, but another under par round for the junior helped him maintain the top spot amongst individuals. Pacific's Eric Sugimoto currently stands in second after shooting a three-under par on Monday bringing his overall score to 143 (-1). Gard and Sugimoto are the only players under par after two rounds.

Gard will enter the final round four-under par and will try to hold onto the individual lead. Behind Gard is sophomore Ryan Tetrault who shot a 76 (+4) on Monday and is currently tied for 13th place. Tetrault began the day tied for third and after two rounds of play he has an overall score of 148 (+4). After two rounds of play Mark Anguiano is tied for 18th place with an overall score of 150 (+6). Anguiano shot a second round 74 (+2) after shooting a four-over par in the first round on Sunday.

Senior Dakota Duerr shot a five-over par (77) on Monday afternoon and finishes the day tied for 32nd place after starting the day in 23rd. Duerr shot a 76 (+4) on Sunday, which brings his overall score to a 153 (+9). Junior Josh Park currently stands in 40th place after shooting a 79 in the second round. Park is 14-over par after two rounds.

Play at the Big West Championships at the Soboba Springs Country Club in San Jacinto, Calif., wraps up tomorrow Tuesday (April 30) with the final round starting at 7:15 a.m. Cal State Fullerton, Pacific, and UC Davis will be the last teams to tee and will get underway at 9:25 a.m. Awards will be presented following the final round and live scoring will be available at Golfstat.com for the final round.
