FULLERTON, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton will kick off their 2020 season with the inaugural Titan Classic this weekend. The Titans will play five games in four days beginning Thursday night with Middle Tennessee at 6:00 p.m.
The Titan Classic, in its third year, features a stout field that includes Middle Tennessee, Loyola Marymount, San Jose State, Utah State, Pacific, and Big West foe UC Riverside. The tournament will feature 17 games in total from Thursday through Sunday.
Following Thursday's opener, Fullerton will play San Jose State on Friday, a doubleheader on Saturday against Utah State and Pacific, and close out the weekend with LMU on Sunday.
This Weekend's Games:
vs. Middle Tennessee: first matchup all-time
vs. San Jose State: CSF leads 32-12 all-time; last matchup SJSU 16-5 CSF (3.6.18)
vs. Utah State: CSF leads 48-23 all-time; last matchup CSF 3-2 USU (2.9.19)
vs. Pacific: CSF leads 71-35 all-time; last matchup CSF 8-0 PAC (2.10.19)
vs. Loyola Marymount: CSF leads 19-7 all-time; last matchup CSF 12-5 LMU (3.22.19)
The Titans are coming off their fourth consecutive Big West Championship and 29th NCAA Regional appearance after going 38-18 overall and 18-3 in conference. They have established themselves as the powerhouse of the Big West, not only with four consecutive titles, but by winning 14 straight conference series and 25 of the last 28 going back to 2016. Last year, they set a new program record for fielding percentage (.975) and fewest errors (37), as well as posting the fifth most home runs (49) and fifth highest slugging percentage (.445).
This year's squad looks very similar to the 2019 team only losing six letterwinners while also bringing back eight of their starting nine and the entire pitching staff. Among those returners are reigning Big West Freshman Pitcher of the Year, Dani Martinez, Co-Big West Freshman Field Player of the Year, Alexa Neil, and seven All-Conference selections in total.
The Titans were picked to win a fifth consecutive Big West title in the preseason coaches' poll last month and are currently receiving votes in the NFCA/USA Today Top 25 poll.
