QUICK HITS
• Cal State Fullerton won its first season opener since 2008 on Friday at Titan Stadium with a 1-0 shutout of Liberty. Fullerton is now 7-14-2 in season openers and 8-13-2 in home openers.
• Cal State Fullerton opened the season 2-0 for the first time since the 2008 team began the year 4-0.
• Fullerton brings back 14 letterwinners – including seven starters – from last year's championship roster including a trio of National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-West Region selections – senior defender Morgan Batcheller, senior midfielder Christina Burkenroad and redshirt senior forward Rebecca Wilson.
• Dating back to 2014, Christina Burkenroad has scored a goal in five straight matches, and has tallied at least one point in seven consecutive games. Burkenroad is one of three Titans, the others Dolores Browning and Michelle Rice, to produce seven straight games with at least one point, and only Browning has totaled more consecutive games with a goal, scoring 11 goals in seven straight games from Oct. 21, 1995-Aug. 31, 1996.
• Fullerton returns 24 of its 30 goals scored from last season led by Rebecca Wilson (10), Burkenroad (6) and Connie Caliz (4).
• Tatiana Rizzotti and Sarah Fajnor recorded the firsts assists of their respective Fullerton careers on opening weekend.
• The Titans welcome 11 newcomers and one returning redshirt.
Cal State Fullerton senior Christina Burkenroad garnered Big West Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week honors for her role in season-opening victories over Liberty and George Washington.
The midfielder collected three goals and one assist over the weekend. She netted her sixth career game-winning goal in Friday's 1-0 shutout of Liberty in the opener of the Fullerton Tournament. Burkenroad hammered home a cross to the back post in the 85th minute to secure the win.
Against the Colonials, Burkenroad notched the opening goal of the match, assisted on what turned out to be the game-winning strike, and provided a late insurance goal as the Titans breezed to a 4-1 victory.
Five of the six shots she took over the games were on target. This is Burkenroad's second Player of the Week honor.
OPPONENTS & HISTORY
Idaho State
3 p.m. | Friday, Aug. 28 | Davis Field
Idaho State enters Friday's match looking for its first win after suffering losses to Missouri State (2-1) and at UC Irvine (3-1) on opening weekend. Maria Sanchez scored both goals for the Bengals. The all-time series between ISU and Fullerton is even at 1-1-1. This will be Fullerton's first trip to Pocatello, and a year ago, the Titans recorded a 4-1 win against the Bengals on Sept. 18 at Titan Stadium.
Utah
12:00 p.m. | Sunday, Aug. 30 | Ute Field
Utah enters the weekend with a record of 1-0-1. Like the Titans, the Utes recorded a 1-0 win at Marquette in their season opener. Utah then played then ranked No. 21 DePaul to a 0-0 tie in Chicago on Sunday.
Sunday will mark the sixth meeting between
the programs as the all-time series is even at 1-1-3. In Fullerton's last trip to Utah, the Utes and Titans played to a 1-1 tie on Sept. 21, 2008. In the last meeting between the two schools, the result was a 0-0 double overtime draw on Aug. 30, 2013 at Titan Stadium.
DYNAMIC DUO
Cal State Fullerton's dynamic duo of senior forward Rebecca Wilson and senior midfielder Rebecca Wilson got off to a hot start on opening weekend.
Christina Burkenroad was named the Big West Offensive Player of the Week after three-goal, one-assist weekend leading the Titans to two wins. Dating back to last season, Burkenroad has now scored eight goals and provided two assists in her last seven games. She is one of just three Titans to produce seven consecutive games with at least one point. In addition, Burkenroad has scored five goals and added one assist in her last five games. The only stretch that is longer belongs to Dolores Browning as she scored 11 goals in seven straight games from Oct. 21, 1995-Aug. 31, 1996. In her career, Burkenroad has scored 16 goals - including six game winners - tallied eight assists and totaled 40 points.
Wilson opened her weekend with two goals and two assists. The reigning Big West Offensive Player of the Year has totaled 45 career points, tying for ninth all-time at Cal State Fullerton with current assistant coach Stacey Fox. Her 17 career goals tie for eighth all-time at Fullerton, while she is just one assist short at 11 of cracking that top-10. Wilson's six game-winning goals match Burkenroad, Fox and former Titans Lauryn Welch and Marlene Sandoval for third all-time.
NEW FACES
Cal State Fullerton's main losses from the Big West Conference 2014 championship team were in the middle of the pitch. Freshman Kaycee Hoover is expected to start at central defensive midfielder - a role she had for the second half of last season - following a season-ending injury to team captain Chelsey Patterson. On the back line, redshirt freshman Lindsay Stasinis is expected to start at central defender paired with senior Morgan Batcheller. Freshman Amanda Larsson is expected to fill in at both spots as well. Also on the back line, the Titans lost Colleen Ortega, but sophomore Dominique DeCoy is challenging for the starting role.
PRESEASON PREDICTIONS
The Cal State Fullerton women's soccer team, which has won the Big West regular season or tournament championship for three consecutive years, was selected to finish third in the Big West Preseason Poll.
Cal Poly, the 2013 regular season champion, received three first-place votes in ballots among the Big West's nine head coaches for a total of 72 points. Long Beach State received one first-place vote of its own with 70 points while Cal State Fullerton, the 2014 regular season and Big West Tournament champion, collected 68 points for third place with three first-place nods.
Morgan Batcheller, Christina Burkenroad and Rebecca Wilson were picked for the 2015 Big West Preseason All-Conference Team.
TITANS WIN FOUR TITLES IN THREE YEARS
Cal State Fullerton claimed four Big West championships in three years after the Titans won the Big West regular season and tournament titles in 2014. Last year, the Titans clinched their fourth Big West tournament title in school history and earned the league's automatic NCAA postseason berth. In 2012, Fullerton won its sixth Big West regular season championship in school history. Cal Poly and Fullerton are now tied for a Big West leading seven regular season championships in program history. This season's title was Fullerton's fifth solo crown after sharing the top spot in 2004 and 2007, the program's sixth in the last 13 seasons, and the third second under Head Coach Demian Brown.
OLD HABITS DIE HARD
In 2014, nine of Fullerton's 22 matches entered overtime. The Titans suffered five losses in extra time, including surrendering the golden goal with less than two minutes remaining on three occasions. Fullerton is 13-15-25 in extra time during Head Coach Demian Brown's eight seasons.
A TRADITION UNLIKE ANY OTHER
When freshman Jessica Simonian stepped on the field for the first time vs. George Washington, she carried on a tradition of sorts in 2015 as her No. 2 jersey is the only number in the history of the Fullerton program to be worn every season since the program began in 1993.
