AURORA, Ore. – Cal State Fullerton and senior Tisha Alyn Abrea find themselves at the top of the leaderboard following the first two rounds of the Rose City Collegiate hosted by Portland State at Langdon Farms Golf Club in Aurora, Ore.
The Titans are atop the leaderboard of the 13-team field after the first 36 holes, shooting a collective 11-over 587. Fullerton posted a 3-over 291 in round two to storm its way to the top of the standings, the third best single round score in the program's history. The Titans are one stroke ahead of San Francisco with UC Irvine going into the clubhouse in third place, 11 shots off the lead.
Abrea finds herself leading the pack of 75 golfers competing at the Rose City Collegiate after she carded a 2-under 142 after two rounds. The Murrieta, Calif. native shot an even par 72 in the opening round and then posted the second best single-round score of her career, recording a 2-under 70 in the final round of the day. Abrea has now posted 10 career rounds of shooting par or better. The senior sunk seven birdies on the day, which tied for the third most by an individual on day one. Abrea was one of just two players to shoot under par for the day as she leads UCI's Samantha Chan by one stroke and USF's Alison Lillie by two.
Abrea leads a Fullerton squad that has four players in the top-25 of the individual leaderboard. Sophomore Martina Edberg posted the second-best score of the day for the Titans, recording a 4-over 148 through 36 holes. Edberg shot a 4-over 76 in the opening round but then recovered in the second as she shot an even-par 72 to find herself in a tie for ninth place. Edberg stormed out of the gates early in the second round, posting four birdies through her first nine holes of the round with just one bogey. But a double bogey on the par-5 No. 7 and a bogey on No. 8 Edberg cancelled that out. Overall, Edberg also recorded seven birdies in the first 36 holes of play.
Senior Makayla Mier is not far behind her sophomore teammate as she is locked in a tie for 11th place after recording a 5-over 149 on day one. Mier posted a 1-over 73 in the opening round, which is the second best single round of her career at Cal State Fullerton. Mier shot a career-best 70 at the "Price's Give 'Em Five" Intercollegiate last season. On Monday, Mier posted six birdies, which tied for the eighth most on the day. Five of them came in round one.
Junior Dakota Brown saw her first action of the season after not competing in the Minnesota Invitational and had a solid day, going into the clubhouse in a tie for 25th place. After a tough opening round of 79, Brown recovered in the second round as she posted a 1-over 73 to finish the day at 8-over. It was the best single-round score of her career with the Titans. In the second round, Brown sunk three birdies, two of them in her last five holes to put her in the top-25 of the standings.
Freshman Brittany Farrell rounded out the Titans scores on the day as she finished with a 11-over 155, still placing her in the top half of the standings as she sits in a tie for 37th place going into the final round. Farrell was tied for second with 27 pars on day one.
As a team, the Titans led the way with 112 pars, tied with Idaho and hosts Portland State. The Titans also ranked third with 25 collective birdies and performed very well on Par-4's, averaging a 4.21 scoring average to lead the field.
The Rose City Collegiate will wrap up Tuesday morning with round three scheduled for an 8 a.m. start off holes 1 and 10.
