Titans Open Season in Pullman at 2012 Cougar Cup

THIS WEEK: The Cal State Fullerton women's golf team finally gets its 2012-13 season underway this weekend in a familiar setting, traveling north to Pullman, Wash., for the two-day, 14-team, 2012 Cougar Cup hosted by Washington State on Sept. 24-25.

THE COURSE: Just a week after the men's team competed on the same course en route to a fourth-place finish, the Titans' women's squad will compete at Washington State's Palouse Ridge Golf Course which will play at par 73 and 6,200 yards for the tournament. Competitors will play 36 holes on Monday beginning at 8 a.m. and a final 18 holes on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.

THE FIELD: In addition to the Titans and host Cougars, the tournament field includes Brigham Young, California, UC Irvine, Eastern Washington, Gonzaga, Idaho, Montana, Montana State, Nevada, Portland State, Sacramento State, and Santa Clara. Host Washington State has twice won the event in 2008 and 2012 with Idaho claiming the 2009 title and in-state rival Washington taking home the title in 2011.

RETURN TO THE PALOUSE: This week will mark the Titans' second appearance in this tournament, but the first since 2010 when Fullerton finished eighth out of 12 teams. Deidre Crabtree was the Titans' top finisher, shooting a 14-over-par, 230 to finish in a tie for 10th. Neomi Hunt was also a top-20 finisher, shooting an 18-over, 234, to finish in a tie for 17th.

A LOOK AT THE TITANS: Cal State Fullerton returns four of its top five scorers who all placed among the top-25 individual finishers at last year's Big West Conference Championships, helping lead the Titans to a third-place finish – its highest since the program was reinstated during the 2009-10 season. Sophomore Tisha Alyn Abrea (tied for eighth at the Big West Championships in 2012) and senior Taylor Fowler (tied for fourth) were honored with All-Big West second-team and honorable mention honors a season ago. Head Coach Pearl Sinn-Bonanni, a three-time All-American at Arizona State, is in her fourth season at the helm of the program.

TAYLOR MADE: Senior Taylor Fowler leads the charge for the Titans in 2012-13 after posting a trio of top-10 finishes as a junior, including a second-place tie at Fullerton's own Folino Invitational on Feb. 19-21. Fowler, the younger sister of PGA Tour pro Rickie Fowler, posted the Titans' best scoring average at 77.04 over 27 rounds – better than two strokes under her 79.36 average as a sophomore -- including a 2-under-par, 70, to start the Lexus Classic in Fresno, Calif.

TISHA TERRIFIC: One of Cal State Fullerton's most consistent golfers as a freshman, Tisha Alyn Abrea was a force for the Titans a season ago, leading the team with a 75.74 scoring average during her rookie season. Abrea posted five, top-10 finishes and ended among the top 25 in all nine tournaments overall – including a pair of runner-up finishes at the Firestone Grill Invitational in Nipomo (13-over-par, 226) and a season-best 1-over-par, 217, at the Lexus Classic in Fresno.
