IRVINE, CA - Cal State Fullerton senior Charlee Underwood and sophomore Toni Thomas each notched double-doubles on the night and the Titans shot just under 47 percent from the field as they defeated host UC Irvine, 77-59, on Thursday night in a Big West Conference women's basketball game at the Bren Events Center in Irvine, Calif.
The win pushes Cal State Fullerton over the .500 mark at 13-12 overall, and 7-4 in the Big West. The Titans matched a season-best with their third consecutive victory and have won six of their last seven games overall.
The Anteaters, who were led by Angie Ned's 22 points, fell to 6-20 overall and 3-9 in league play.
Thomas scored a team-best 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting to go with 10 rebounds and a pair of blocks. Underwood was 5-of-12 from the floor and finished with 11 points to go with 16 rebounds.
The duo was joined in double figures by junior Dayana Frias, who finished with 15 points, and senior Andrea Adams, who came off the bench to add 10 more points to go with two blocks.
UC Irvine led by four points, 28-24, on a Miranda Forry jumper with 5:38 remaining in the first half before Cal State Fullerton exploded for a 14-2 run, which included three three-pointers to take a 38-30 advantage with 3:24 left in the period.
The Titans would score the last seven points of the half to go into the locker room with a 47-34 lead. Cal State Fullerton would not look back building the lead to as many as 22 points with 4:36 to go in the second half.
Fullerton outrebounded UCI, 47-33, and had a 25-5 advantage in bench scoring.
Cal State Fullerton closes out the weekend with a game at Long Beach State on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 17) at 4 p.m. at the Walter Pyramid.
