Anguiano Claims Sahalee Players Championship Title

Sahalee Players Championship Results

SAMMAMISH, Wash. – Former Cal State Fullerton men's golfer Mark Anguiano took a major step in his quest to turn professional as he garnered the 21st Sahalee Players Championship (SPC), held at the Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Wash., on Wednesday.

Anguiano, had started the final round with a one-shot lead over Kurt Kitayama, the senior-to-be at UNLV, but immediately separated himself from the field with birdies on three of the first four holes. The former Titan concluded the event carding an 8-under-par 280 (71-69-69-71), winning the title by four-strokes. It was Anguiano's first time playing in the SPC.

"The greens here are exactly like the greens at home (at Friendly Hills Country Club in Whittier), so I felt really comfortable around the greens all week," Anguiano said following his victory.

The Whittier, Calif., native concluded his illustrious career at Fullerton being named on the 2014 Division I PING All-West Team after leading his team to the Sugar Grove Regionals, the first NCAA postseason appearance since the program was reinstated in 2009-10. The accolades over his impressive senior season included an individual championship at the Fullerton-hosted Folino Invitational, being named the Big West Player of the Year while also leading the Titans to their second consecutive conference title.

Up next for Anguiano will be the U.S. Amateur in August before hitting the links at the professional level.

Past champions of this prestigious SPC amateur championship include Kyle Stanley, Casey Martin, Peter Uihlein, Nick Taylor, Daniel Summerhays, Ryan Moore, Chris Williams, Arron Oberholser and Jason Gore, among others.

Five of the past 10 SPC champions were winners of the Ben Hogan Award, given to the nation's top collegiate golfer. More than a dozen SPC participants have gone on to play on the PGA Tour.

This year was the 21st installment of the Sahalee Players Championship. In addition to the 2010 U.S. Senior Open, which was won by Bernhard Langer, Sahalee also tested the world's best when it hosted the 1998 PGA Championship, won by Vijay Singh, and the 2002 World Golf Championships-NEC Invitational, won by Craig Parry.
