Titans Back on the Road, Head to Pacific and UC Davis

After a six-match homestand, Cal State Fullerton will return to the road and head to Northern California this week to take on Pacific (Friday) and UC Davis (Saturday). 

The Titans are in the middle of a tough stretch, losing their last five matches, but displayed a spirited effort last Saturday. Fullerton faced an 0-2 deficit against No. 7 Hawai'i, but rallied back to even the match with wins in games three and four. The Rainbow Wahine prevailed in game five, but CSF's Bre Moreland and Kayla Neto each recorded double-doubles of 14 kills and 13 digs, respectively.

Pacific opened Big West play last Saturday with a 3-1 loss at UC Davis. The Tigers are an undefeated 3-0 at the Alex G. Spanos Center in 2012, with sweeps of Portland State, Nevada and Northern Illinois. Pacific will be returning to its home floor after playing its last eight matches on the road, including a three-set win at San Jose State on Tuesday night. The Tigers have won four of their last five, and their only other loss other than UC Davis, was at then No. 8 Stanford (0-3) on Sept. 8.

Inside the Numbers: The Tigers and Titans played three like opponents in non-conference, with Pacific tallying wins over Washington State (3-0), Nevada (3-0), and Santa Clara (3-2). Pacific ranks second in the Big West with a .237 attacking percentage…the Tigers lead the Big West holding opponents to a .155 hitting percentage, and also lead the league averaging 18.34 digs per set…the Tigers also rank third in the BWC averaging 13.72 kills per set...Pacific setter Hannah Clancy leads the Big West averaging 11.09 assists per set.

Jennifer Sanders and Megan Birch each recorded 16 kills to lead Pacific to a five-set victory over visiting Cal State Fullerton. A night removed from coming back from a 2-0 set deficit to beat UC Davis, the Titans were unable to hold on to a 2-0 lead and suffered the same fate at the paws of the Tigers. Fullerton wasted a strong performance by junior Kayla Neto, who posted a 21-kill, 19-dig stat line in the 25-22, 25-22, 22-25, 20-25, 11-15 loss.

UC Davis opened Big West play last Saturday with a 3-1 win over Pacific at The Pavilion on the UCD campus. The Aggies were led by Devon Damelio's 15 kills, while the club also totaled 13.5 blocks in the win. UCD enters the weekend with an even record of 7-7, but having won three of its last four matches. 

Inside the Numbers: Along with UC Riverside, UC Davis is the only other school in the Big West Conference that the Titans hold advantages in all-time overall and conference wins. UCD and CSF have played one similar opponent from the non-conference portion of their respective schedules, as both teams suffered five-set losses to Santa Clara. The Aggies rank third in the BWC averaging 2.45 blocks per set.

Kayla Neto's 21 kills and 20 digs powered Cal State Fullerton to a come from behind, 3-2 Big West Conference victory over UC Davis at The Pavilion to sweep the season series from the Aggies. The Titans, winners of three of their last four, fell behind 0-2 (18-25, 17-25) heading into the break, but collected themselves upon returning to the court, to win three straight sets, 25-23, 25-18, 15-12. 

RETURNING TO TITAN GYM • PROMOTIONS
After hosting six straight home matches, the Titans will hit the road for their next three matches. Fullerton will return to Titan Gym on Thursday, Oct. 11, to host UC Irvine. It will be high school night as area volleyball teams will be admitted for free. (Contact ticket office before attending for restrictions). On Saturday, Oct. 13, CSF will host "Rivalry Night." Fans that wear orange will receive a "Beat the Beach" sign.

RECORD BREAKERS
Senior Kayla Neto has totaled 1,295 kills during her career at Cal State Fullerton, a number that ranks fifth all-time. She would need to total 84 more kills to pass Megan Sabo's (1998-01) fourth-place mark of 1,378.  Neto's 48 career solo blocks tie for 10th place in Titan all-time history, while her 213 block assists rank sixth. Neto's mark of 261 total blocks rates seventh all-time. In addition, Neto has accumulated 1,535.5 points at CSF, a total that ranks fourth all-time at Fullerton. Her 86 career service aces rank ninth all-time. Gabrielle Dewberry's total of 908 digs ranks tenth all-time at CSF. She needs just three more to surpass Susan Herman's (1986-89) total of 910 for ninth place.

A SOLID CAREER
Senior Kayla Neto currently leads the Titans with 208 kills (3.78 k/s) in 2012 – a mark that also ranks sixth in the Big West. The Titans participated in four tournaments in 2012, and Neto earned all-tourney accolades in two competitions, the Georgia Tech Courtyard Invitational and the Wolfpack Invitational. 

In her last three matches, Neto has recorded double-doubles (kill/digs) as she continues to ascend up the top-10 lists in the CSF record books.

Neto has also been a force at the service line as well, and now ranks ninth all-time in Titan history with 86. She is just five shy of tying Megan Sabo's 91 aces from 1998-2001.

MORELAND EMERGING
Junior Bre Moreland was voted to three all-tournament teams in 2012. The native of Mission Viejo, Calif., is averaging 3.71 kills and 2.78 digs per set. In addition, Moreland has totaled 22 blocks and leads the Titans and the Big West with 26 aces. She is second on the roster with 244.5 points for Fullerton this year.

CONSANI TAKES CONTROL
Sophomore Julie Consani currently ranks eighth in the Big West averaging 8.64 assists per set. The native of Newport Beach, Calif., enjoyed the finest weekend of her young career as the Titans' setter at the Wolfpack Invitational (Sept. 6-7). She posted 10.25 assists per set (123 total) with 29 digs and six blocks, while also managing a career best with 46 assists in a win against the host Nevada Wolfpack. She followed that performance with 141 assists (9.40 a/s) at the Fullerton Classic. She totaled her third 40-plus assist match this season with 41 against Santa Clara on Sept. 15.

TAEATAFA TRIUMPHS
Senior Kaylynne Taeatafa was able to return to the court vs. Cal State Northridge last Friday after missing the 10 previous matches due to injury. Last weekend, the native of Spring Valley, Calif., totaled 63 assists for the Titans (7.0 a/s) while also using her creativity with eight kills. Defensively, she added 22 digs and two block assists. She also recorded her first double-double of 2012 with 32 assists and 14 digs in a four-set loss to Cal State Northridge last Friday.

SHOWING THE KID THE ROPES
Junior Leah Best leads the Titans with 54 blocks (0.98 b/s), followed by rookie Holland Crenshaw 48 (0.91 b/s). Best, a 6-foot-6 middle blocker has 12 solo blocks and 42 blocks assists to Crenshaw's six solo blocks and 42 block assists. Best's best performance of the season came against Santa Clara (Sept. 15), when she stuffed her share of nine attack attempts (3 solo, 6 assists). Crenshaw opened some eyes when she had eight block assists against Sacred Heart on Sept. 2.

AROUND THE BIG WEST
Kayla Neto (6th, 3.78 kps) and Bre Moreland (7th, 3.71 kps) currently rank in the Big West's top 10 in kills per set…Julie Consani ranks eighth in the league with 8.64 assists per set…Bre Moreland leads the Big West with 26 total service aces (0.48 per set)…Kayla Neto's 20 service aces (0.36 per set) rank fourth in the league followed by teammate Gabrielle Dewberry (8th, 16, 0.29 per set)…Dewberry also ranks fourth in the Big West, averaging 4.45 digs per set (239 total).
