SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA - Cal State Fullerton junior right-hander Candice Baker tossed a two-hit, complete-game shutout in the nightcap to help the Titans to a split of a Big West Conference doubleheader with Cal Poly on Saturday evening at Bob Janssen Field in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
The Mustangs won game one by a 3-1 count with the Titans rebounding for a 2-0 win in game two. Cal Poly moved to 25-21 overall, 9-5 in conference play while Cal State Fullerton moved to 32-22 overall and 10-4 in league action.
In the first game Kelly Comstock opened the bottom of the third with a bunt single and advanced to second when Lisa Modglin followed with a single past third. With two outs Chelsea Green single to left center on a full count, driving in two runs. The inning ended when Melissa Pura struck out looking.
The Titans lone scoring threat came in the top of the sixth when Courtney Martinez doubled to center with one out. With two outs, Ashley Van Boxmeer walked to put runners on first and second for Kiki Munoz who singled to right center, scoring Martinez. The inning ended when Ashlee Weatherford flied out to deep left field.
The Mustangs answered back in the bottom half of the inning when Sarah Iwata opened the inning with a double off the left field wall. Iwata moved to third on a ground out to second by Green. Pura followed with a ground ball to short and was safe at first when Candice Baker tried to catch Iwata at third. Iwata scored on the next pitch when CSF catcher Ashlee Weatherford threw the ball into left field on a failed pick off.
The inning ended with Pura stranded at third.
Robyn Kontra went the distance in the win for the Mustangs when she allowed one earned run while striking out three and walking four. With the win she improved to 14-9 for the year. Marissa Marzan took the loss when she gave up three runs, two earned while striking out two.
In the game Cal Poly had four hits and no errors while the Titans also had four hits but committed two errors in the loss.
The Titans got on the board first in the second game in the top of the third when Crystal Vieyra opened the inning with a double to right center. Vieyra advanced to third on a single by Tiffany Hoff but was cut down at the plate when Candice Baker hit a ground ball to first and Melissa Pura came home with the throw. Whitney Kroh, pinch running for Hoff, scored on a single to center by the next batter, Amanda Kamekona.
With one out in the top of the fifth the Titans added their second run when Baker doubled to left center. She moved to third one out later on a wild pitch and scored when Stephanie Tam, at second for the Mustangs, could not handle a ground ball hit by Martinez.
In the bottom of the seventh for the Mustangs, Lee opened the inning with a infield single to short and moved to second one out later when Green walked on five pitches. But both were left stranded as Pura and Tam struck out to end the game.
Baker earned the win for the Titans with a two-hit shutout. Baker struck out nine and walked just two in picking up her 19 win (19-9).
Jenna Maiden took the loss (8-9) when she allowed six hits and two runs (one earned).
The two teams will conclude the three game series with a single game at noon on Sunday. Prior to the start Cal Poly will honor the team¹s two seniors.
