FULLERTON, CA - Cal State Fullerton's bats exploded for 25 runs on 25 hits as the Titans swept a pair of games from visiting Long Beach State by the scores of 9-1 in six innings and 16-0 in five innings on Saturday afternoon at Anderson Field.
With the wins, Fullerton improved to 24-18 overall and moved into sole possession of first place with a 6-2 record. The 49ers fell to 20-17, 5-3 in league play.
The 16 runs in game two were the most scored by a Titan squad since they defeated Georgia State 16-1 in five innings on March 19, 1997. The four home runs in game two tie a school record last accomplished in 1999 and the 16 runs and 18 hits were season-high's.
The Titans swept a doubleheader for only the third time this season and they extended their season-best winning streak to four consecutive games.
Sophomore's Amanda Kamekona and Crystal Vieyra led all players with five hits in the doubleheader.
Game three of the series will be made up on Wednesday (April 19) at 5 p.m. at Anderson Field. That will preceed a three-game series for the Titans at Pacific beginning on April 22.
GAME 1: CAL STATE FULLERTON 9, LONG BEACH STATE 1 (6 inn.)
Sophomore Amanda Kamekona had three hits and drove in three runs - including the game-ending two-run triple in the sixth - to help lift the Titans to a 9-1 victory over the 49ers in game one at Anderson Field.
For Kamekona, it was her fourth three-hit game of the season and extended her hitting streak to five consecutive games. Four other Titans also added hits.
Junior Candice Baker (15-7) earned the win in relief, tossing 2 2/3 innings of hitless softball, walking one and striking out three. Senior Marissa Marzan pitched well in the no decision, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out three in 3 1/3 innings of work.
Michelle Turner (17-8) suffered the loss, allowing five earned runs (seven overall) on four hits, walking one and striking out two in five innings of work.
Fullerton broke through on the scoreboard in the first inning as Ashley Van Boxmeer reached on an error moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on Kamekona's single back up the middle to make it 1-0.
The Titans made it 2-0 in the second as freshman Courtney Martinez reached on an error and eventually came around to score when Crystal Vieyra skied a ball deep in foul territory in right where Lacy Tyler made the catch, but it was enough to score the run.
Long Beach State got a run back in the third when Breezy Goad drew her second walk of the game with one out and moved to third on a single by by Tiffanie Wedell and a walk to Turner.
Goad then scored one batter later on an RBI single to left center by Jessica Beaver, cutting Fullerton's advantage to 2-1.
That's when the floodgates opened for the Titans as Fullerton scored three times in the fifth on an error and a two-run home run by Katie Gollhardt, her fifth of the season, for the 5-1 advantage.
Cal State Fullerton then closed out the game with four in the sixth on RBI hits by Vieyra and Van Boxmeer and Kamekona's two-run triple to invoke the eight run-rule.
GAME 2: CAL STATE FULLERTON 16, LONG BEACH STATE 0 (5 inn.)
Cal State Fullerton tied a school record with four home runs - including two by sophomore Crystal Vieyra - and the Titans set season-highs in runs scored and hits as they swept a doubleheader with Long Beach State thanks to a 16-0, five-inning win on Saturday at Anderson Field.
Five Titans had multiple hits, led by Vieyra's 4-for-4 outing with three runs scored and five RBI - all career high's. Senior Ashlee Weatherford went 3-for-3 as did sophomore Jenna Wheeler, who also homered and drove in a pair. Junior Ashley Van Boxmeer went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBI while sophomore Amanda Kamekona went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Candice Baker (16-7) went the distance, tossing four innings of no-hit softball before surrendering her only hit to Jonae Perez to lead off the fifth. Baker finished with her fourth shutout of the season along with six strikeouts.
Jennifer Martinez (2-9) suffered the loss, allowing all 16 runs (15 earned) on 16 hits while walking four in 3 1/3 innings. Melissa DeMarco pitched the final 2/3 of an inning, allowing two hits.
Fullerton got the scoring started with three runs in the second inning on Van Boxmeer's eighth home run of the year to dead centerfield to make it 3-0.
The Titans added two more in the third on Vieyra's first home run of the game - a two-run shot to left to make it 5-0.
That's when it all went downhill for the 49ers as the Titans sent 16 batters to the plate in the fourth inning, scoring 11 times on 10 hits and capitalizing on three Long Beach State errors.
Seven different Titans had RBI hits in the fourth, including Vieyra, who had a pair of hits in the inning - a three-run home run and a single to left.
