Senior Marissa Marzan allowed just one run while striking out six in a complete-game effort in game two to lift visiting Cal State Fullerton to a split of its series opening doubleheader against Cal State Northridge on Saturday afternoon at Matador Diamond.
The Titans moved to 22-18 overall, 3-2 in the Big West Conference with the win while the Matadors moved to 12-13 overall, 1-3 in Big West play.
In game one, the Matadors took a 1-0 lead in the first without the benefit of a hit. Peek led off with a walk and stole second. Junior Kelly Zakosek then sacrificed Peek to third, and after junior Megan Smith walked, Grund lifted a scoring fly ball to left to plate Peek and make it 1-0.
Peek would make it 2-0 in the fifth when she hit her team-leading sixth homer of the season to right-center.
Salazar was in total control in the circle, striking out one and walking four in her second complete-game shutout of the season. Peek and senior Jan Moshier had the two hits for the Matadors.
For Fullerton, Candice Baker struck out six and allowed both runs and five walks. Kiki Munoz and Ashley Van Boxmeer each had singles for the Titans. The closest Fullerton got to scoring was in the third. With Whitney Kroh at third and Baker at first, Baker took off for second, but Kroh was retired on the return throw by Peek to keep the Titans off the board.
In the second game, Marissa Marzan and junior Sam Schroeder dueled to four scoreless innings before the Titans took a 1-0 lead on the first pitch of the fifth. Crystal Vieyra hit her second homer of the season to straight-away center to give Fullerton the advantage.
However the Matadors evened the score on a jack of their own as Grund would homer to left-center in the sixth to make it a 1-1 game.
But the Titans broke the game open with a five-run seventh. Vieyra led off with a double, advanced to third on a sacrifice by Baker, and scored one batter later when Courtney Martinez singled to right-center. Katie Gollhardt would make it 3-1 when she singled home Van Boxmeer and the Titans added two more when a Jenna Wheeler fly ball was dropped when senior Jamie Pederson and sophomore Jackie Duree collided in the outfield. Amanda Kamekona rounded out the scoring by singling to center to score Wheeler.
Marzan went the distance and struck out six, allowing four hits and two walks. Wheeler and Vieyra each had two hits for the Titans.
Grund had a 2-for-3 game for the Matadors, while Duree and Peek also had singles. Schroeder went five innings and allowed a run, three hits and three walks. Salazar was saddled with the loss, allowing two earned runs, five hits and two walks in two innings.
The Matadors and the Titans play the rubber game of their three-game series on Sunday. First pitch is at Noon at Matador Diamond.
