Titans Take Down Aztecs in Rainy Battle

FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton (8-3) defeated San Diego State (6-4) by the score of 5-1 as rain fell throughout the game. Overall the game was two hours and 52 minutes including a 40-minute rain delay in the bottom of the second.

The Titan offense got off to a slow start, but picked it up. Ari Williams stayed red hot going 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored. She has now reached base in all 11 games so far with hits in 10 of the 11. Alexa Neil extended her on-base streak to eight straight games going 1-4 with an RBI. Daisy Munoz had a productive day reaching base three times, going 1-2 with a walk and a hit by pitch.

Irie Siofele and Janelle Rodriguez each picked up a hit and an RBI in the win. Julia Valenzuela and Kelsie Whitmore also recorded knocks going 1-2 each.

In the circle, Janelle Rodriguez got the start, but struggled with her command only going 1.1 innings allowing a run while walking two. Sophie Frost came in to relieve her and was dominant. The junior righty finished the game throwing 5.2 shutout innings only allowing two hits and a walk while striking out three.

San Diego State got on the board in the top of the first to get the scoring started, but that would be the only run they would get across.

Fullerton got a rally started in the second inning thanks to a pair of walks and a hit by pitch loading up the bases. The rain would start to come down as the umpires called a rain delay before Neil would have a chance to hit.

The delay lasted 40 minutes, but the field was ready to go once the tarp was pulled. Neil would keep the inning going with a single off the pitcher's glove tying the game up at one.

The Titans were kept quiet in the third, but came back in the fourth making noise. Whitmore got the offense going with a single into right field and advancing to second on a groundout. Williams laced a line drive into right field bringing in Whitmore and used her speed to get all the way to third on the throw home.

Siofele would collect an infield knock to bring in Williams and would eventually come in to score on a bases loaded walk to Rodriguez. With Sam Kennedy at the plate, a wild pitch would bring in the Titans' fourth run of the inning.

That was more than enough run support as Frost was cruising through the Aztec lineup retiring seven straight from the fourth inning into the sixth.

Fullerton will look to ride the momentum into the Mary Nutter Classic where they will face some tough competition. Their first game of the weekend will be against #5 Washington on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in Cathedral City, Calif.
