Edberg Shines, Titans Sit in Twelfth After Day One of Minnesota Invitational

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Sophomore Martina Edberg finished in the top-10 and Cal State Fullerton sit in a tie for 12th place after the first day of The Minnesota Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota at the Minikahda Club in Minneapolis, Minn. 

The Titans shot a collective 41-over par 617 through the first two rounds of the tournament. They opened the day with a 21-over par 309 in the first round and improved on that by one stroke in round two, shooting a 308.

Playing in a field that features four schools that finished in the top 50 of the 2013-14 GolfStat NCAA Head-to-Head rankings, the Titans find themselves five strokes from the top-10 in the tournament with Illinois and SMU tied for ninth at 36-over par. Every team participating in the Minnesota Invitational finished in the top-100 of the GolfStat rankings in 2013-14. East Carolina leads the field after shooting a 5-over 581 in the first two rounds.

Edberg, the reigning Big West Conference champion and conference freshman player of the year, continued where she left off as she paced the Titans with a 2-over 146 in the two rounds. She shot an even-par 72 in the second round, her 11th career round of shooting par or better in 10 tournaments played. Edberg recorded six birdies on the day and finds herself in a tie for sixth place. The Glumsov, Sweden native is 11 shots off the lead after East Carolina's Frida Gustafsson Spang stormed out in front of the 75-player field, shooting a 9-under 135 through the first two rounds, six strokes ahead of the next closest competitor.

Freshman Brittany Farrell had an impressive debut for the Titans, finishing the day in a tie for 25th place after shooting a collective 9-over 153 through the first two rounds. Farrell shot a 2-over 74 in the opening round to place her in a tie for eighth place but fell off the pace with the leaders after posting a 79 in round two. The Dove Canyon, Calif. native recorded five birdies on the day. 

Seniors Makayla Mier and Tisha Alyn Abrea finished the day in a tie for 55th and 59th place respectively. Mier posting a 15-over 159 on day one, recording three birdies on the day while Abrea scored a 16-over 160, draining four birdies on the front nine in the second round en route to a 5-over 77.

Nadine Rivera rounded out the Titans performers on Monday, recording a collective 166 through the first two rounds.

Fullerton will return to the links Tuesday for the third and final round of the Minnesota Invitational.
