Titans, Coleman Finish Sixth at Bill Cullum Invitational

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton posted its second top-10 team finish of the season and sophomore CJ Coleman earned a top-10 spot in his first career tournament as the Titans wrapped up the Bill Cullum Invitational hosted by CSUN on Tuesday at the Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley, Calif.

The Titans carded a 2-over 866 over 54 holes to finish in sole possession of sixth place. Fullerton was one of six Big West Conference teams to finish in the top 10. UC Santa Barbara took the overall title, tying the tournament record with a 31-under 833, 16 strokes better than UC Irvine. Long Beach State (-11) finished third while Seattle and Utah State rounded out the top five in the team standings. Cal Poly finished tied for seventh, five strokes back of Fullerton and CSUN placed 10th in the 15-team field.

The Titans top individual performer was himself competing as an individual as Coleman earned a top-10 finish in his first career tournament. Coleman tied for sixth overall as he shot a 7-under 209 including a 4-under 68 on Tuesday. Coleman and teammate Matt Wilson tied for fifth place in the 96-player field with 14 birdies at the tournament. Coleman also finished third overall in par-3 scoring with a 2.83 stroke average and 2-under overall score on those holes.

Wilson led the Titans team effort as he was the top scorer for Fullerton in the team competition. He recorded a 5-under 211 to finish in a tie for 11th place overall. He posted a 1-under 71 in the third round and would finish sixth in par-4 scoring with a 3.93 stroke average and 2-under overall score.

Michael Sharkey (214, t17th), Mark Cobey (217, t32nd), and Ty Stites (225, t66th) rounded out the Titans team scoring with Matt Murphy's 226 (t72nd) just missing out as a qualifying team score. Cobey also tied for fourth in par-3 scoring with a 2.92 stroke average and 1-under overall score on those holes while also recording an eagle and 12 pars at the tournament.

On the individual side, Jack Ireland posted a 3-over 219 to set a new personal best. He finished in a tie for 43rd place overall but did record a 4-under 68 on Tuesday. Martin Manalo was just one stroke behind Ireland, posting a 4-over 220. He tied for second overall at the tournament with 40 pars, just one behind leader Nick Jan of LMU. Davis Holman (236, t86th) and Dario Hamada (237, t88th) rounded out the Titans competitors at the Bill Cullum Invitational.

The Titans will return to action on Oct. 27 when they head up to Northern California to participate in the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational.
