Titans Begin Three-Week Stretch of Tournaments at 2016 Bill Cullum Invitational

After more than five weeks since opening the 2016-17 campaign, the Cal State Fullerton men's golf team returns to action this week at the 2016 Bill Cullum Invitational hosted by CSUN.

THE COURSE: Situated in the shadows of the Santa Susana Mountains, Wood Ranch Golf Club has earned recognition among the finest private golf clubs in Ventura County. The award-winning championship par-72 golf course designed by Ted Robinson will play as a par-72 at 6,849 yards for the Cullum.

THE FIELD: The 15-team field is comprised of Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton, CSU Bakersfield, Long Beach State, Loyola Marymount, Pacific, Seattle, Southern Utah, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, Utah, Utah State, Weber State and CSUN. Loyola Marymount is the defending team champion while Southern Utah's Fidel Concepcion won the 2015 Individual title with a score of 207.

IN THE RANKINGS: The Titans are currently ranked No. 116 in the country according to this week's Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings. The rest of the field clocks in as follows: Cal Poly (No. 86), CSU Bakersfield (No. 275), Long Beach State (No. 264), Loyola Marymount (No. 132), Pacific (No. 182), Seattle (No. 172), Southern Utah (No. 189), UC Irvine (No. 77), UC Riverside (No. 161), UC Santa Barbara (No. 190), Utah (No. 89), Utah State (No. 139), Weber State (No. 178) and CSUN (No. 195).

LAST TIME AT THE BILL CULLUM INVITATIONAL: Last year, the Titans finished 10th in the team standings with a 12-over 893, well back of Loyola Marymount's tournament best 842.  Meanwhile Matt Murphy posted an even-par 216 to place 22nd in the individual leaderboard, nine strokes back of medalist Fidel Concepcion of Southern Utah.

IT'S BEEN AWHILE: The last time Cal State Fullerton was out on the golf course was more than a month ago when the Titans recorded a top-5 team finish at the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate hosted by Washington State. Fullerton carded a collective 17-over 869, which was the 18th lowest 54-hole total in program history and the first time ever the Titans have finished a tournament with a score of 869. Individually, the Titans were led by freshman Ty Stites and sophomore Matt Wilson. Stites carded a 1-over 214 for the tournament including a 4-under 67 in the final round to log his first career round in the 60s. He tied for 12th place while Wilson was just one stroke behind his teammate at 215. He also posted a third round score in the 60s, carding a 3-under 68 in the final 18 holes.
