Fullerton Places Seventh at Big West Conference Championship
SIMI VALLEY, Calif. – Freshman Matt Wilson delivered his best round of the tournament carding a third-round score of 1-under 71 as the rookie finished tied for third on the leader board, while the Cal State Fullerton men's golf team placed seventh at the Big West Championship following its best round of the event, 3-over 291, at Wood Ranch Golf Club on Wednesday.

Fullerton's three-round score of 24-over-par 888 placed the Titans at seventh in the standings while UC  Riverside entered the final round of play with a six-stroke lead and never let up as the Highlanders went on to capture the 2016 Big West Conference Men's Golf Championship after carding a three-day score of 2-under 862.

The Highlanders claimed their first men's title since 2005 after leading second place Cal Poly by three strokes.

Cal Poly fired the low-round score of the day at 3-under 285 but it wasn't enough to surpass the sizable lead the Highlanders opened the day with.  The Mustangs' second place finish is their best showing since claiming the second spot in 2007.  UC Santa Barbara ended the event in third place (872, +8), followed by UC Davis (873, +9), Long Beach State (873, +9), CSUN (883, +19), Cal State Fullerton (888, +24), UC Irvine (891, +27) and Hawai'i (904, +40).

Wilson carded a three-round score of 1-under 215 to finish tied for third, the best placement for a Titan since Mark Anguiano tied for second in the standings in 2014. He was also the top placing freshman at the event, and Wilson's finish at the Big West Championship is the best for a Titan rookie since the program was reinstated for the 2010 season. For Wilson, it was third time he led the Titans at an event during the spring.

Redshirt senior Mark Jensma fired a final round of score of 3-over 75 to finish the tournament tied for 30th with a three-round effort of 10-over-par 226.

Freshman Jack Ireland moved up 11 spots in the standings to tie for 32nd after carding his best round at the championship, 1-under 71, to finish with a three-round total of 11-over 227.

Redshirt freshman Davis Holman shot 2-over 74 in the third round and completed the tournament carding a three-round score of 12-over-par 228 to tie for 34th in the standings.

Sophomore Mark Cobey also tied for 34th after shooting 6-over-par 78 in the third round for a final score of 228 (+12).

Gaucho Brandon Bauman entered the conference championship with the league's second-best stroke average off 71.6, but he finished the event atop the leaderboard to capture UCSB's first individual medalist honor since Jeff Wood claimed the title at the 2001 championship.

Bauman's 4-under 212 edged out Cal Poly's Cole Nygren, who fired a 3-under on the final day for a three-round score of 213, by one stroke.
