Titans Drop to Eighth at Big West Championship

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. – Freshman Matt Wilson had another solid outing for Cal State Fullerton during the second round of play at the Big West Conference Men's Golf Championship, but as a team the Titans struggled dropping from fourth to eighth in the standings after a score of 15-over-par 303 on Tuesday at Wood Ranch Golf Club.

Fullerton's two-round score of 21-over-par 597 has the Titans at eighth in the standings while UC  Riverside bettered its first day performance by 14 strokes to card a two-round, 2-under-par total of 574 (294-280) to lead the 2016 Big West Conference Men's Golf Championship. The Highlanders, who haven't won a men's golf title since 2005, currently sit atop the leaderboard with a six-stroke advantage over second place Cal Poly with one round remaining.

Following Cal Poly is UC Santa Barbara (581, +5), Long Beach State (582, +6), UC Davis (584, +8), CSUN (584, +8), UC Irvine (594, +18), Cal State Fullerton (597, +21) and Hawai'i (603, +27).

Wilson shot his second even-par round of 72 in as many days, and his two-day score of 144 (E) has him tied for sixth in the standings.

Sophomore Mark Cobey carded a second-round score of 3-over-par 75 and is tied for 28th on the leaderboard with a two-round total of 6-over-par 150.

Redshirt senior Mark Jensma dropped 14 spots in the standings to 31st as he fired a second-round score of 5-over-par 77 to total his two-round mark at 151 (+7).

With a two-round score of 10-over-par 154, freshman Davis Holman is 40th in the standings after carding a second-round score of 9-over-par 81.

Rounding out play for the Titans was freshman Jack Ireland, who is now tied for 43rd on the leaderboard after shooting a 79 (+7) in the second round to bump his two-day total to 12-over-par 156.

On the individual side, there is currently a three-way tie for the top spot between UC Santa Barbara's Brandon Bauman, Long Beach State's Daniel Chian and UC Davis' Ben Corfee.  All three own a 3-under 141 as they enter the final round of play tomorrow.   Rounding out the top five are CSUN's Louis Calderon (143) and UC Riverside's Andrew Spilman, who vaulted from 25th to tied for 4th after blasting a tournament-low, 5-under 67 on day two for a two-round score of 143.

The third and final round of the Big West Conference Men's Golf Championship will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
