Titans Return to Links for El Macero Classic This Weekend

FULLERTON, Calif. – After posting a season-best seventh place finish at the Redhawk Invitational in Washington on Tuesday, the Cal State Fullerton men's golf team looks to continue the momentum in El Macero, Calif., to compete at the El Macero Classic as one of nine teams participating in the three-day tournament at the El Macero Country Club hosted by UC Davis on Friday-Sunday.

THE COURSE: The three-day event will be contested at the El Macero Country Club, playing at 6,912 yards from the tournament tees and par 72 for the 54-hole event. Play begins at 7:20 a.m. on Friday for the first round, continuing with a start on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. for the second round, and will conclude Sunday for the final 18-holes at 7:00 a.m.

El Macero has served as a qualifying spot for several USGA events over the years, while numerous notable PGA Tour players that have played in tournaments at the course include Byron Nelson, Peter Jacobsen, Tiger Woods, and Nick Watney. El Macero is a quick 12-minute drive from downtown Sacramento, and when serving as the Governor of California, Ronald Reagan used to enjoy the golf experience in between government meetings.

THE FIELD: Competing alongside the Titans and Aggies will be another Big West foe in Cal Poly, along with Fresno State, Grand Canyon, Marquette, Nevada, Sacramento State and Utah Valley to round out the nine-team field.

IN THE RANKINGS: Following the completion of the first eight tournaments in the 2014-15 men's golf season, Cal State Fullerton is ranked No. 201 in the nation according to the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings, facing a field that features all other eight teams ranked higher than the Titans in this week's tournament:

Tournament host UC Davis headlines the field at No. 61, followed by No. 90 Marquette, No. 107 Sacramento State, No. 123 Nevada, No. 129 Utah Valley, No. 136 Fresno State, No. 149 Cal Poly and No. 172 Grand Canyon round out the participants.

LAST TIME OUT ON THE LINKS: The Cal State Fullerton men's golf team completed play at the second annual Redhawk Invitational in seventh place among an 18-team field at the Chambers Bay Golf Club in University Place, Wash. on Tuesday.

The Titans tallied a final score of 911 (+71) after firing a third round 23-over 303 to post their highest finish of the season. Washington garnered the team championship logging a total score of 854 (+10). The Huskies shot a third round of 15-over 295, wrapping up the event over 20-strokes ahead of the nearest competitor.

Fullerton senior Ryan Tetrault improved from his day one total to climb nine spots and finish 10th after carding a final round of 72 (+2) en route to a total score of 220 (+10). The native of Villa Park, Calif. led the tournament with 13 birdies over the 54-hole event to notch his second top 10 finish of the season and 14th of his career.

Washington was followed by host Seattle (+38, 878), TCU (+43, 883), Seton Hall (+55, 895) and Missouri-Kansas City (+61, 901) to round out the top five teams.

The Washington duo of Frank Garber (+2, 212) and Corey Pereira (+3, 213) concluded play at Chambers Bay in first and second place, respectively, and Charlie Kern (+4, 214) of William & Mary rounded out the top three on the individual leaderboard.

Cal State Fullerton sophomore Kyle De Silva and freshman Mark Cobey concluded the tournament tied for 42nd position after each tallied a three-round score of 22-over 232, respectively. De Silva, a native of Orange, Calif. shot a final round of 12-over 82, while Cobey turned in a final 18-holes mark of 8-over 78 after sinking a total of seven birdies over the two-day event.

CSF senior Josh Park carded a third round of 75 (+5) to finish in 63rd with a total score of 236 (+26), while junior Mark Jensma wrapped up play in Washington with a final tally of 239 (+29) following a third round 8-over 70.

TAP-INS:

• Fullerton's final score of 600 (+24) at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational (Sept. 29-30) was the fifth lowest 36-hole team score in program history. 

Ryan Tetrault recorded his 14th top-10 career finish after placing 10th at the Redhawk Invitational. Tetrault stands alone in the number two spot for most all-time behind Mark Anguiano (2011-14) who garnered a whopping 20 top 10 finishes over his illustrious career.

• Fullerton has carded three under-70 rounds this season, accomplished by Ryan Tetrault (68), Mark Cobey (68) and Marcus Mercado-Kiel (69).

Ryan Tetrault became only the fifth Titan in program history to collect at least 110 career rounds. Tetrault currently stands at 123 rounds with at least three possible rounds left to play in the spring to tie the graduated Corey Gard (2011-14), who notched 126 total rounds.

SEASON SCHEDULE: Cal State Fullerton's 2014-15 campaign features ten tournaments before the Big West Championships.

Fullerton will also hit the links outside the state of California, visiting Arizona, Colorado, and Washington over the course of the season: 2014-15 Schedule 

A LOOK AT THE TITANS: The Titans carded nine top-five finishes last season, while returning a pair of student-athletes that were in the lineup for the 2014 Big West Conference Championships. Ryan Tetrault garnered All-Big West First Team honors after carding six top-10 finishes in 2013-14. Kyle De Silva also returns for his sophomore campaign after earning valuable postseason experience at the Sugar Grove Regionals in Sugar Grove, Ill. De Silva participated in 11 of 12 events last season.

The Titans will have to replace Mark Anguiano, Corey Gard and Scott Rubzin, but welcome in five newcomers to the fold this season in freshman Michael Alvarez (Pomona, Calif./Coronado HS), Mark Cobey (Woodland, Calif./Jesuit HS), David Stitt (Simi Valley, Calif./Royal HS) and a pair of transfers, Nico Mendoza (Yorba Linda, Calif./Santiago Canyon College) and Marcus Mercado-Kiel(Santa Ana, Calif./Orange Coast College).

THE WRATH OF THE TITANS: After losing in a playoff to Pacific for an NCAA berth in 2012-13, Fullerton responded in a big way in 2013-14 to capture its second consecutive conference championship, and first outright title to earn its first postseason appearance at the Sugar Grove Regionals. The Titans ended their most successful season winning four tournaments (Bill Cullum Invitational, Warrior Princeville Makai Invite, Folino Invitational, Big West Championship) while finishing second in a pair of tournaments (Itani Quality Homes Collegiate, El Macero Classic).
