Titans Hit the Links for El Macero Classic This Weekend

FULLERTON, Calif.-- After finishing fourth at the Desert Shootout in Goodyear, Ariz.,
two weekends ago, the Cal State Fullerton men's golf team returns to the links and heads to El Macero, Calif., to participate in the El Macero Classic as one of 12 teams competing in the three-day tournament co-hosted by UC Davis and Nevada on Apr. 18-20.

THE COURSE: The three-day event will be contested at the El Macero Country Club, playing at 6,912 yards from the tournament tees and par 72 for the 54-hole event. Play begins at 7:20 a.m. on Friday for the first round, continuing with a start on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. for the second round, and will conclude Sunday for the final 18 holes at 7:00 a.m.

THE FIELD: Competing alongside the Titans will be squads from co-hosts UC Davis and Nevada, Marquette, Colorado State, Idaho, Cal Poly, Sacramento State, Utah Valley State, Boise State, Seattle University and Grand Canyon.

IN THE RANKINGS: Cal State Fullerton is ranked No. 54 in the nation according to the Golfstat.com NCAA team rankings, facing a field that features all other competing teams ranked lower than the Titans: UC Davis is No. 72, Nevada is No. 89, Marquette is No. 101, Colorado State is No. 104, Idaho is No. 108, Cal Poly is No. 116, Sacramento State is No. 133, Utah Valley State is No. 137, Boise State is No. 179, Seattle University is No. 217, while Grand Canyon is currently ineligible for ranking.

According to the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings, Fullerton is one of three top-100 ranked teams in the competition rated at No. 67; The rest of the field: UC Davis is No. 64, Nevada is No. 100, Marquette is No. 110, Colorado State is No. 104, Idaho is No. 108, Cal Poly is No. 138, Sacramento State is No. 129, Boise State is No. 177, Seattle University is No. 203, and Grand Canyon is No. 194 while Utah Valley State is currently unranked.

FROM ONE CLASSIC TO ANOTHER: This week will mark the first-ever participation for the Titans in the El Macero Classic hosted by UC Davis and Nevada. The tournament has changed courses recently and been renamed from the previous Winchester Classic in Meadow Vista, Calif. Last year's event at the Winchester Country Club, Par 72, Cal State Fullerton walked away with the 2013 crown with a final tally of (290-292-286—868, +4) while Sam Johnston from Oklahoma Christian, took home the individual championship with a mark of (209, -7).

A LOOK BACK FROM THE DESERT: Fullerton senior Mark Anguiano finished in third place with an overall score of 204 (-12) to pace the Titans to a fourth place finish at the Desert Shootout at the Palm Valley Country Club in Goodyear, Ariz. on Mar. 20-22, 2014.

The Titans shot 555 (-21) over the first day of play, including a 274 (-14) second round and a score of 280 (-8) in the third round to finish 835 (-29). UMKC walked away with the victory after finishing the tournament with a score of 833 (-31) and clinching a one-hole playoff for the crown. 

The Kangaroos shot a 274 (-14) final round on Saturday. UMKC was followed by BYU (833, -31), Idaho (834, -30), Cal State Fullerton (835, -29) and Kansas State (841, -23) to round out the top-five. 

Junior Ryan Tetrault (207, -9) ended the tournament tied for eighth while senior Corey Gard finished tied for 15th with an overall score of 210 (-6).

Fullerton freshman Kyle De Silva concluded the tournament with an overall score of 216 (E), chalking up his lowest total score of the season.

Junior Josh Park ended the tournament 15-over par 231 to tie for 82nd in the standings while senior Scott Rubzin competed as an individual in the event. Rubzin fired a total score of 221 to stand at 5-over-par to finish tied for 59th place.

 

 

HOME SWEET HOME: Cal State Fullerton excelled both as a team and individually at its host event in City of Industry, Calif., in the Folino Invitational on Feb. 17-18. Seven out of the 11 Titans on the 2013-14 Men's Roster produced their best finishes of the season:

• Fullerton's overall score of 29-under-par 835 at the Desert Shootout marked both the highest number of strokes under-par and lowest total team score since the Titans clinched first place at the Warrior Princeville Invite on Nov. 4-7, 2013 with a tally of (272-274-276—822, -42). CSF was 13-strokes shy of setting the season-high of 42 strokes under-par.  

• Four Titans have taken over 1,800 strokes on the season while still holding a scoring average of under-72 (Gard 1,937; Tetrault 1902; Anguiano 1,878).

• Following the Titans fourth place finish at the Desert Shootout in Arizona, Cal State Fullerton's team ranking dropped four spots from No. 50 to No. 54 in the Golfstat.com NCAA team rankings.

• Three Titans own current season scoring averages of below 72.00 (Anguiano- 69.55, Tetrault- 70.44, Gard- 71.74)

• At the Desert Shootout, senior Scott Rubzin became the first Titan to individually compete in an event this season and record a round of par or better in 2013-14: 72 (E), First Round, Mar. 20, 2014.

• Fullerton has had 30 under-70 rounds this season led by 14 from Anguiano, and six from Gard and Tetrault, respectively.
