Titans Finish Second at Washington State Tournament

FULLERTON, Calif. – Entering the day in second, the Cal State Fullerton men's golf team made a late rally to top the leaderboard, but fell just one stroke short in the final round on Tuesday afternoon to finish second at the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate in Pullman, Wash.

After 36 holes on Monday, the Titans trailed Washington State by seven strokes after shooting a 559, including a 282 first round and 277 second round. The Titans shot 837 (-2) over two days of play, including a score of 278 on Tuesday afternoon. The 837 over 54-holes is the lowest team score in a three-round tournament since the program was reinstated in 2009.

Host Washington State won the tournament after a 4-over par final round, finishing with a score of 836 (-4). Finishing in third was Sacramento State (842, +2) after shooting 3-under as a team in the final round. Idaho (847, +7) and San Jose State (856, +16) finished fourth and fifth to round out the top five teams.

With a total score of 203 at 7-under par, San Jose State's Cody Blick and Washington State's Blake Snyder shared the top spot of the individual standings. Blick and Snyder entered the day tied in first at 5-under par and both finished with a third round 68 (-2) on Tuesday.

Senior Mark Anguiano was the highest finishing Titan, after shooting a 65 on Tuesday and finishing six-under par overall. The 65 shot by Anguiano is the best individual round since John San Juan shot a 65 at the Del Walker Invitational on Oct. 22, 2009. Anguiano finished tied for third overall after shooting 204. The Whittier, Calif., native entered the day 1-under par after shooting a first round 70 (E) and second round 69 (-1). 

After entering the day 4-under, senior Corey Gard shot a final round 71 (+1) to finish tied for fifth place with a total score of 207. He shot a 4-under, 66, in round one and an even-par, 70, in the second round on Monday. Gard contributed on Tuesday with three birdies and ten total in the tournament. 

Junior Ryan Tetrault finished strong for the Titans moving up nine spots after shooting a final round 68 (-2) on Tuesday. The Villa Park, Calif., native finished tied for fifth overall with a total score of 207.

Redshirt senior Scott Rubzin shot a final round 76 (+6) and 223 overall to finish tied for 55th overall. After missing all of the 2012-13 season to injury, Rubzin tallied seven birdies and nine bogeys in his first tournament since 2011. Josh Park finished the tournament with a score of 225. Park shot a 74 in the final round and finished tied for 65th.

Fullerton will return to the links in two weekends when the team competes in the Dash Thomas Memorial Tournament hosted by Boise State in Boise, Idaho on Sept. 23-24.
