GREENVILLE, S.C. – Cal State Fullerton men's basketball fell to No. 2-seed Duke in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Friday night by a final score of 78-61 at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena.
"I can't say how proud I am of this group. Coming into this game and competing against Duke was a complete honor and privilege, but compete is exactly what our guys did," Head Coach Dedrique Taylor said. "They came out, and they played extremely hard, and they didn't quit, and they have absolutely nothing to hang their heads about."
The Titans battled Duke tough throughout the entire game, fighting like Titans until the final whistle blew.
Fullerton trailed 22-9 early in the first half before back-to-back three-pointers by Tray Maddox Jr. and Jalen Harris cut it to a seven point game and gave the Titans all the momentum at the time.
Damari Milstead led the Titans offensively with 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting including 2-of-3 free behind the arc. Mistead also grabbed five rebounds and dished out three assists.
Duke did a good job of containing Big West Tournament MVP, E.J. Anosike. However, the veteran forward kept competing and played at 100 percent for the entirety of the game. Anosike finished his collegiate career with another double-double, his 10th of the season, on 10 points and 10 rebound.
Head Coach Dedrique Taylor did what no coach has ever done before at Cal State Fullerton, leading the Titans to the NCAA Tournament on two separate occasions. Furthermore, he is the first coach to have two 20+ win seasons and is the first coach to have 10+ conference wins in four different seasons.
