Floro Taken by Rays in MLB Draft

June 6, 2012

Fullerton, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton right-hander Dylan Floro was a 13th round pick-up for the Tampa Bay Rays in this year's Major League Baseball First-Year Players Draft held this week in Secaucus, New Jersey.

The Merced, Calif., native was the headliner on the Titan pitching staff, posting a conference-leading 10 victories and a 2.83 ERA over 114.1 innings en route to being named the Big West Conference Pitcher of the Year and a third-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball.

Floro was the workhorse on the team, hurling seven-or-more innings in 11 of his 15 starts and led a staff that finished first in the nation in fewest walks per nine innings.

The junior also finished in the nation's top 25 in strikeout-to-walk ratio, fanning 70 while walking just 13.

Floro fired three complete games on the year, but his third was a six-hit shutout of long-time rival Long Beach State that clinched the Titans a share of their 26th Div. I conference championship on May 25.

Floro was the lone draft selection from the Titan program in 2012, which typically has a strong showing on the draft boards in June. It is the first time in the 38-year Div. I history of the Fullerton program that just one player was taken.

As few as two have been taken in both 1991 (Frank Charles and Matt Hattabaugh) and 1975 (Frank Estes and Dan Boone). Charles and Boone went on to become two of the Titans' 52 major leaguers.
