Baseball Loses to Arizona State

FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton fell to Arizona State by a final score of 12-2 Tuesday night at Goodwin Field. 

Fullerton got off to a quick start as they led 2-0 in the first inning. Brett Borgogno led the inning off with a slow chopper to the ASU pitcher, Boyd Vander Kooi, who threw the ball away to first allowing Borgogno to reach second base on the play. Borgogno stole third before scoring on a Zach Lew RBI double to right center. Lew would advance to third on a passed ball before scoring on a sacrifice fly by JJ Cruz.  

The Titans had eight hits for the night with Brett Borgogno and Zach Lew both finishing the night with multi-hit games. Borgogno was 2-for-4 with one run scored and Lew was 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.

Lew is now hitting .362 this season with nine runs and six RBI. After a slower start to the season Borgogno has rebounded in a big way, upping his batting average to .276.

Arizona State scored 12 unanswered runs en route to the 12-2 win over the Titans. The Sun Devils added three runs in the third, five runs in the sixth, and two runs in the eighth and ninth innings. 

The Sun Devils top MLB draft prospect, Spencer Torkelson, was 2-for-3 for the day with two walks. Torkelson hit a 426-foot home run in the eighth inning, his sixth of the season. Drew Swift was 2-for-5 with 4 RBIs for the night.

Landon Anderson got the start and suffered the loss for the Titans. Anderson tossed 3 innings and allowed three runs on two hits, four walks, and fanned two batters.

Boyd Vander Kooi picked up the win for the Sun Devils after throwing 8 innings. Vander Kooi allowed two runs (zero earned) on eight hits, zero walks, and six strikeouts.

Fullerton and Arizona State meet again Wednesday night for the final game of the short two-game midweek series. First Pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. PT.
