FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton (4-7) dropped the rubber game to San Francisco (4-7) Sunday afternoon at Goodwin Field by a final score of 7-6.

The Titans got off to a quick start as Brett Borgogno led the first inning off with a double down the left field line.  He stole third base before eventually scoring on a Zach Lew RBI single to right field.

With the game tied 1-1 in the fourth inning, Miguel Ortiz blasted his first career home run and the first home run the Titans have hit all season over the left field wall to make it a 2-1 game.

Joe Magrisi got the starting nod for the Titans and was excellent through six innings before running into trouble in the seventh inning.  Magrisi allowed four runs on seven hits, one walk, and struck out five in 6.1 innings.

In the seventh inning the Dons struck for five runs in the inning.  Magirisi allowed a double to Jacob Munoz, walked Chase Hodkinson, and a base hit to Matthew Mendible that tied the game up at 2-2.

The Titans switched pitchers to Peyton Jones who inherited runners on the corners. The Dons countered with Jacob Westerman as a pinch-hitter and Westerman hit a three-run homer over the right-field wall to give the Dons their first lead of the day at 5-2.  The Dons would add one more run before the inning ended to give them a 6-2 lead.

The Titans had some late inning heroics as Ortiz led the bottom of the seventh with a double off the left field wall. USF pulled their starter and brought in their shutdown reliever from the previous night, Julian Washburn.  Washburn got two quick outs before Borgogno singled to the shortstop to put two runners on. Josh Urps blasted his first career home run and the second Titan home run of the day with a 3-run bomb over the right field wall to make it a 6-5 game.

Fullerton gave up another run in the top of the eighth inning which would turn out to be the game-winning runs as the Titans scored one in the ninth to come within one run.

Brett Borgogno and Miguel Ortiz both finished with multi-hit days.  Borgogno was 2-for-3 from the dish and Ortiz was 2-for-4. Matthew Mendibles led the way offensively for the Dons going 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Jacob Munoz and Tyler Villaroman both had multi-hits in the game going 2-for-4.

The Titans look to bounce back this week as Arizona State comes to Goodwin Field for a midweek series on Tuesday and Wednesday.
