FULLERTON, Calif. – Junior Grahamm Wiest tossed his fifth career complete game and J.D. Davis and Greg Velazquez each hit their second home run of the year to power No. 3 Cal State Fullerton to a 5-1 victory over San Francisco Sunday afternoon at Goodwin Field.
Wiest was masterful on the mound for the Titans (4-3), allowing one unearned run on five hits and striking out 10, a new career high. He allowed just three base runners to advance to second base all afternoon and retired 11 of the first 12 batters he faced. He also did not allow the Dons (3-4) to collect an extra base hit on the afternoon.
The Titans got themselves on the board in their half of the fourth inning after Matt Chapman started things off by getting hit by the pitch with one out. Davis followed and launched a 1-0 offering by Dons pitcher Matt Narahara high into the sky toward right field. The ball kept carrying and settled into the netting over the fence give Davis his second round tripper of the season and put the Titans up 2-1.
The score stayed that way until the sixth inning when Davis led off the frame with a four-pitch walk. Velazquez came up and unloaded on a 1-0 fastball that cleared the netting in left field and landed in the parking lot to put the Titans up 4-1. Austin Diemer would add an RBI single later in the inning to cap the scoring for the Titans and Wiest did the rest.
Davis finished the game 1-for-2 with a pair of runs scored and two walks while Velazquez was 2-for-4. Chapman was 1-for-3 with a double and finished the three-game set 7-for-16 (.438 BA) with two doubles and a home run while slugging .750.
Narahara drew the loss for the Dons after going five innings. He allowed two earned runs on seven hits and struck out two.
The Titans offense came after they spotted the Dons a run in the first inning when second baseman Matt Sinatro singled to lead off the game. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt to give Bradley Zimmer a chance to drive him in. But A.J. Kennedy could not handle a pitch in the dirt and Sinatro broke for third. Kennedy's throw then sailed into left field and Sinatro came in to give the Dons a quick 1-0 lead.
The Titans won their second consecutive series at home and will now head out on the road for a three-game set at Oregon on Friday.
Notes: After taking two out of three from the Dons, the Titans now have a winning record over every school in the West Coast Conference. They hold a 294-100-3 all-time mark against WCC schools… Wiest's previous career high in strikeouts was nine, a mark he reached three times with the last coming against Long Beach State on March 24, 2013… Titans pitchers allowed the Dons to score just two runs in the final 31 innings of the series… Sunday's finale went two hours and 11 minutes, the shortest game of the season for the Titans… This weekend's series between the Titans and Dons drew 5,790 fans to Goodwin Field, with 2,144 taking in Friday's 19-inning marathon.
