DAVIS, Calif. – No. 4 Cal State Fullerton completed the sweep of UC Davis with a 5-2 victory at Dobbins Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Titans (28-4, 6-0 Big West) remain at the top of the league standing as the only undefeated team in conference play, and also extend their current winning streak to seven games.
In addition, the Titans have now swept five weekend series in 2013, including four straight, while also maintaining an 11-game road win streak.
UC Davis drops to 10-19 overall and remains winless in Big West play at 0-6.
Fullerton starter Grahamm Wiest (6-1) allowed two runs on six hits in the win, walking one batter and striking out four in seven and 2/3 innings of work.
Tyler Peitzmeier recorded the final out of the eighth with the game-tying run at the plate, striking out Spencer Brann. In the ninth, Peitzmeier struck out the first two batters he faced, but surrendered a double to Seth Batty that was aided by the miscommunication of Michael Lorenzen and Austin Kingsolver in the outfield.
The Titans then called J.D. Davis to the mound as he recorded his second save of the year by coaxing Evan Heptig into a fly out to right field.
Richy Pedroza spurred the Titan offense with a 3-for-4 performance, leading off both innings that Fullerton scored in.
Pedroza led off the game with a single to right center and moved to second on a sacrifice before stealing third, setting up Davis' RBI single to left center as the Titans claimed an early 1-0 advantage.
The Titans scored four runs on three hits and two UC Davis errors to extend their lead to 5-0 in the third. Pedroza again led off the inning, driving a double down the left field and scoring courtesy of an Aggie error as UC Davis starter Evan Wolf fielded Carlos Lopez's bunt single, but his throw was wide of the bag at first, allowing Pedroza to score CSF's second run of the game.
With Lopez on base, Davis reached on Tino Lipson's throwing error, setting the table for Lorenzen's three-run homer to left field. It was Lorenzen's team-leading sixth round tripper of the year.
Wolf (1-1) was credited with the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits and one walk while striking out two in three innings of work. The Aggies committed five errors in the game.
UC Davis cut Fullerton's lead to 5-1 in the fifth as Austin Logan led off the bottom of d frame with a double to right, and scored courtesy of Heptig's RBI single dumped into left field.
In the eighth, the Aggies added a run as Heptig picked up his second hit of the day, slashing a double down the left field line, and scoring on John Williams' RBI single placed into center field.
In three innings of relief, Spencer Henderson shut out the Titans on three hits and struck out three. Patrick Hennessey and Craig Lanza also appeared in relief.
Logan finished the game batting 2-for-3 for the Aggies with both hits recorded as doubles. The Aggies recorded five doubles in the game, the most the Titan pitching staff has allowed in 2013.
Chad Wallach and Lorenzen finished with two hits apiece for the Titans.
