USC NOTES:  USC (11-17, 4-5) returns to Dedeaux Field to host Stanford on Friday. Last weekend, the Trojans took two-of-three from California in Berkeley, Calif.

VERSUS USC: USC and Cal State Fullerton have met 85 times dating back to 1975.  The Titans hold a 47-37-1 advantage in the all-time series, while Cal State Fullerton boasts a 23-15 record at its home field.  Tuesday will mark the third and final meeting between the two programs in 2013. On opening night, Thomas Eshelman was the first Titan freshman since 1987 to start a season opener for Cal State Fullerton, and he didn't disappoint the sellout crowd of 3,508 as CSF edged the Trojans, 3-2, on Feb. 15 at Goodwin Field. In the win, Eshelman (1-0) allowed two unearned runs on four hits while striking out six in six innings of work.
On March 6 at Dedeaux Field, Cal State Fullerton cruised to an 11-4 victory over USC. Fullerton posted a then season-high 11 runs on a then season-best 15 hits (five for extra bases), as the Titans scored eight runs in the first two innings.
Right-hander Koby Gauna was efficient on the mound, pitching five shutout innings and facing just one batter over the minimum, while allowing three hits as the Titans turned two double plays. Gauna also fanned five in the win.

VERSUS THE PAC-12: The Titans hold a 273-203-3 record all-time against teams currently in the Pac-12 Conference. This season, Fullerton holds a 5-1 record against Pac-12 clubs, winning two out of three against then 14th-ranked Oregon, defeating USC on Feb. 15 and March 6, and most recently, a 9-6 victory at No. 10 UCLA on Tuesday.

A JUMP IN THE RANKINGS: Cal State Fullerton entered the week at No. 4 in the Baseball America Top-25 poll.

OFF TO A HOT START: Currently with a record of 25-4, Fullerton's start is the best for the program since the 1996 squad opened the year 31-2. The NCAA RPI currently rates Fullerton at No. 4 in the country as the Titans boast a 6-1 record against top-25 teams. The closest Big West program to Fullerton's ranking is Cal Poly at No. 49.

ROOKIE ARMS: Cal State Fullerton's 2.61 ERA leads the Big West Conference and ranks 17th in the nation, and a big part of the pitching staff's success is a pair of freshman right-handers in the weekend rotation, with Thomas Eshelman getting the nod on Friday nights, followed by Justin Garza (Saturday).

On Feb. 15, 2013, Eshelman (6-1, 1.26) became the first freshmen to start a season opener for the Titans since Feb. 5, 1987 when Mark Beck took the mound vs. Saint Mary's. Eshelman didn't disappoint the sellout crowd of 3,508 as CSF edged USC, 3-2, on Feb. 15. In the win, Eshelman allowed two unearned runs on four hits while striking out six in six innings of work.

Currently, Eshelman's ERA of 1.26 ranks second in the Big West Conference, 31st in the nation, and third amongst freshman in the country this season. In 50  innings pitched, the rookie from Carlsbad, Calif., has yet to issue a walk, while striking out 35. Eshelman's streak is the longest for Fullerton since Wes Roemer tossed 65 and 2/3 innings in 2006 without issuing a base on balls. In addition, Eshelman's 0.56 WHIP (walks plus hits per inning pitched) leads the nation. WHIP is a measurement of the number of baserunners a pitcher has allowed per inning pitched.

Garza (6-0, 2.31) has picked up wins over Nebraska, TCU, Oregon, Texas A&M, Oral Roberts and Pacific during his seven weeks on the mound. In 46 and 2/3 innings, Garza has surrendered 12 earned runs while fanning 39. Garza was the first Titan freshman since Dylan Floro in 2010 to win five straight starts.

FREE RIDE: Cal State Fullerton entered the week leading the country allowing just 1.6 walks per  9.0 innings pitched. In addition, the Titans 4.67 strike-to-walk ratio also ranks first in the country. Sunday starter Grahamm Wiest, has totaled 43 strikeouts to lead Fullerton and rank third in the Big West. In addition, Wiest's 10.75 strikeout-to-walk ratio ranks eighth in the nation.

AT THE PLATE: Entering the 2013 season, Cal State Fullerton had 15 position players from a year ago returning to the roster, including six starters. That wealth of experience has helped the Titans to its No. 4 ranking and 25-4 record. Fullerton's offense currently leads the Big West or is tied for the lead in the following offensive categories: on-base percentage (.403), runs scored (202), hits (288), RBIs (182), triples (16), walks (141), hit-by-pitch (52) and stolen bases (39).

Fullerton enters the series at UC Davis having recorded double-digit hits in four consecutive games.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN: Fullerton boasts a 13-1 record in road games this season, and the Titans have won their last eight road games.

EARLY AND OFTEN: A key ingredient to Fullerton's success has been the club's ability to score early and often. Cal State Fullerton has outscored opponents in 37-6 in the first inning in 2013, and Fullerton has outscored opponents 72-21 in the first three innings of games this year. Fullerton is 19-1 in 2013 when scoring first.

OVER THE FENCES: In 2012, the Titans totaled just 10 home runs. After just  seven weeks in 2013, Fullerton has already surpassed that total, hitting 16 round trippers. Michael Lorenzen leads the Titans with five home runs  followed by Anthony Hutting (4), J.D. Davis (2), Jake Jefferies (2), Austin Kingsolver (1), Carlos Lopez (1) and Richy Pedroza (1). The Titans have also hit three grand slams in 2013.

GOOD FOR EXTRAS: Entering the weekend on a team-best 13-game hitting streak, Michael Lorenzen leads the Titans in batting average (.385), slugging percentage (.642), hits (42), runs scored (26), RBIs (31) doubles (7), triples (3) and home runs (5).
On the mound, Lorenzen is a perfect 9-for-9 in save attempts, and also had his streak extended to 13 games dating back to 2012. In addition, Lorenzen's 25 career saves rank sixth all-time at Fullerton.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.

NICK HURTADO: The Cal State Fullerton baseball program is mourning the loss of teammate Nick Hurtado, who passed away at the age of 21 after a battle with cancer on March 1.
Hurtado, a 2010 graduate of Corona Santiago High School in Corona, Calif., committed the Titans as a senior in the fall of 2009, before his battle with bone cancer began.
Hurtado was a four-year letterwinner for head coach Ty DeTrinidad and the Sharks. Before his senior season began, Hurtado was diagnosed with cancer after being hit by a ball in the knee during the preseason. On March 5, 2010, he made his only appearance of his senior season at Corona Santiago, tossing one pitch (a strike) in the opening game of the 2010 season just days before his treatment was to begin.
The pitcher was finally able to join the Titans for the 2012 season, but sat out the year as his treatment and recovery continued. Due to his illness, he was unable to join the roster in 2013, but made the effort to connect with his teammates at Goodwin Field as often as possible.
