Ramirez Wins Steeple at UCI, Valdivieso With Big Discus Throw at USC

FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton track and field was split among two meets in Southern California on Friday with a group of distance runners competing at the UCI Spring Break Collegiate Classic and the throwers competing at the USC Trojan Invite. The remaining track and field events at the USC Trojan Invite resume on Saturday at 10 a.m. PT while the Titans are done at UCI.

Danny Ramirez won the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase at UCI with a personal-best time of 9:12.73. He bested the second-place finisher by nearly four seconds. Ramirez has battled injuries throughout his career and the last time he was able to run the steeplechase was at the 2014 Big West Championships when he took fifth place in 9:19.86

Sierra Valdivieso had a huge personal-best toss of 157-2 (47.92m) in the discus at the USC Trojan Invite that was good for second place overall. Her previous best toss was 136-10 (41.70m) at the Ben Brown Invite. Valdivieso also threw the hammer 143-10 (43.84m). Sinai Fatafehi threw the hammer as well and took ninth place with a mark of 149-1 (45.46m).

Tanner Miller had a big personal-best throw in the men's hammer, going 173-8 (52.93m) to take seventh place. In eighth place was Patrick Ng with a mark of 172-7 (52.61m).

Corey Gilbert had a season-best toss of 162-1 (49.42m) in the discus that was good for sixth place overall. Ng finished in ninth place in the event with a mark of 151-11 (46.31m) and Adam Leiva took 12th place (147-1, 44.84m).

Wendi Leos ran the 5K in 17:43.98, a season-best time and 15 second improvement from running in the rain at the Ben Brown Invitational. That time was good for seventh place overall. In the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, Gabrielle De La Rosa clocked a time of 10:56.95 to earn a fifth-place finish overall. It was her first steeplechase race of the season.
