RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton men and women's outdoor track and field squad opened the 2015 season in dominating fashion at the Riverside Community College Open on Saturday, posting nine first-place finishes to go along with multiple personal-best finishes throughout the one-day meet.

Arguably the best performance of the day came courtesy of sprinter Janaya Shorty.  Coming off an indoor season where she posted multiple top-five finishes, Shorty dominated the sprinting events on Saturday in Riverside.  The sophomore posted first-place finishes in 100-meter dash (11.76 seconds), the 200m dash (23.87 sec.) and was the anchor of the 4x100m relay that finished in the top spot with a time of 46.25 sec.

Joshua Gordon was the standout for the Titans on the men's squad.  Just a couple days after receiving the honor of Cal State Fullerton's scholar-athlete of the year award for men's sports, the Northridge, Calif. native took home first place in the 400m dash (41.01 sec.) and was part of the first-place finishing 4x100m relay team, posting a time of 47.5 sec. in his leg of the race.

It was an all-around strong showing for the Titans as they continue to build upon their success from the indoor portion of the season and into the outdoor schedule.

Women's Track and Field

Morgan Thompson and Tyler Hardge joined Shorty with first-place finishes in the opening meet of the outdoor season on Saturday.  Thompson took home the top spot in the 400m dash with a time of 55.72 sec. and Hardge crossed the finish line first in the 100-meter hurdle.  Hardge posted a personal-best time of 14.21 sec., shattering her previous-best time by almost a full second.

Other personal-best finishes came from Calaiah Branch in the 400m dash (57.43 sec.), Kimberly Amaya in the pole vault (11-feet-0 inches), India Owens in the 100m hurdle (15.10 sec.), Catherine Craig (41.65m) and Tayla Shultz (32.79m) both rounded out the strong outing for the women's team with personal bests in the hammer throw.

Men's Track and Field

There were multiple "firsts" for the men's squad to begin their 2015 outdoor season, with Mason Guzman-Sanchez, Trevor Gorwin competing for the first time in their collegiate careers in the 110-meter hurdle and hammer throw, respectively.  Gorwin posted a 51.52-meter throw in his first ever hammer throw competition, and took home first place in the shot put competition with a 16.54 meter throw.  Guzman-Sanchez started off his Titan career the best way possible, running the 110m hurdle in 15.22 sec. to take home top prize.

The only student-athlete to best Gorwin in the hammer throw on Saturday was teammate Steven Parsons.  After his first two attempts fell short of the mark set by Gorwin, the red-shirt junior threw the hammer a distance of 52.14 meters, and that mark was not beaten by any of the competitors through the final round as Parsons took home first place.

Other standout performances on Saturday belonged to sprinter Nick Sole who set a new personal best in the 400m dash (48.11 sec.), and Steven Williams who took home the top high jump of the day (6-feet-8.25 inches) in his first competition in almost two years.

"This was a really positive start to our season," 27th-year head coach John Elders said.  "There were so many strong performances in the meet, but Janaya Shorty and Trevor Gorwin really stood out. Janaya absolutely dominated the sprints, and this was a great start to what could be a very special season for her. Trevor in his first collegiate competition won the shot put and was runner-up in the hammer. Usually freshman don't pick up the hammer this quickly, he's the real deal."

The Cal State Fullerton outdoor track and field team will be back in action on Friday, Mar. 13 and Saturday, Mar. 14 at the Titan Track Complex to host the annual Ben Brown Invitational.  The first event will begin at 10:00 a.m. with the men's hammer throw.
