Titans to Compete in Three Meets Over the Week

FULLERTON, Calif. –
 The Cal State Fullerton track and field team will split up over three different meets this weekend, as some of the team will head to the Mt. SAC Relays, while other student athletes will compete at the California Invitational Combined Events and the Bryan Clay Invitational. 

Most of the attention at the Mt. SAC Relays on Friday will be with the sprinters, where Fullerton will send 13 student-athletes, including Titan standouts Katie Wilson (200m, 400m), Destinee Brown (100m, 200m), Ashley Sims (100m, 200m), Deena Pierce (100m hurdles, 400m hurdles), Daniel York-Mouton (400m), Luis Matos (100m), and Alexander Ostrowksi (110m hurdles).

 

The Titans will also compete in the 4x100 and 4x400 relay races on both the men's and women's side. Fullerton took home a win in the women's 4x100m relay, as well as a third place finish in the 4x400m relay, while the men finished second in the 4x100 relay last weekend at the Big West Challenge.

 

Three Titans will compete at the CA Combined Events in Azusa Pacific on Wednesday and Thursday. Nicolette Garcia and Taylor Frank will participate in the heptathlon, while Ostrowski will test his skills in the decathlon for the first time this season.

 

On Friday, Fullerton will send most of the squad to Azusa, Calif., also for the Bryan Clay Invitational. Over 35 student athletes will compete in mid-distance events and field events.

 

2013 Mt. SAC Relays

 

At last year's Mt. SAC Relays Bryan Luther, Deena Pierce, and Javon May all recorded personal bests in the in the 200-meter dash, 100 and 400-meter hurdles respectively.

Luther ran a personal best time of 21.44 and placed second in the 200 meter dash, which was the best time in the Big West at the time. May also recorded a personal best mark of 52.22 and placed second in the men's 400-meter hurdles, which ranks was the third-best time in the Big West and 31st in the NCAA West Region. Luther and May also helped lead the Fullerton men's 4x400 meter relay squad, as it dropped its time by nearly three seconds, as it ran a season best 3:14.98.

 

Walter Whitaker highlighted things for Titan field athletes, as he recorded a leap of 14.91 in the men's triple jump, keeping him at third in the league for that event.

On the women's side, Pierce ran a time of 13.87 and placed third in section four of the 100-meter hurdles Katie Wilson also recorded another solid outing, as she ran a time of 54.91 and placed 13th in the women's 400-meter dash. Ashley Sims ran personal best 24.18 in the women's 200-meter dash last season.

 

Taking a Look Back at Last Weekend's Big West Challenge

 

At the Big West Challenge last weekend, the Titans combined for eight first-place finishes and one meet record in the 22nd annual event at Anteater Stadium in Irvine, Calif. The Titan women finished second, while the men placed third.

 

The Titan women placed first in 4x100-meter relay as the quartet of Ashley Sims, Alexandria Stewart, Katie Wilson, and Destinee Brown recorded a time of 45.72 setting a new meet record.

 

For the second straight year, junior Deena Pierce claimed a first-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles at the Big West Challenge with a season-best time of 61.43. Pierce also took first in the women's 100-meter hurdles crossing the line first with a time of 14.20, recording her first win in the event this year.

 

Senior Jasmyne Davis took home two first-place finishes in the long jump and triple jump. Davis recorded a first-place finish with a jump of 18-03.75 to lead all competitors in the long jump – her second-best mark of the year.

 

Freshman Luis Matos recorded his first first-place finish of his career with a time of 10.83 in the men's 100-meter dash, and Wilson recorded her third first-place finish of the year with a time of 54.49 in the women's 400 meters. Freshman Malik Johnson placed first in the men's high jump with a mark of 6-06.75.

 

Next Up

After competing in the Mt. SAC relays, the CA Combined Events Invite, and the Byran Clay Invite, the Titans will next head to Penn Relays in Philadelphia, PA.
