Three School Records Cap Weekend at MPSF

SEATTLE, Wash. – A diverse combination of three school records, highlighted the final day of the MPSF Championships, Saturday, as the Cal State Fullerton indoor track and field team concluded its final regular season meet with new school records in the 60-meter dash, one-mile run, and pentathlon.

Freshman Destinee Brown led a blazing 60-meter dash on Friday to qualify for Saturday's 60-meter final. On Friday, the Los Angeles native ran a 7.40 school record and on Saturday the freshman finished sixth with a time of 7.52. Brown also placed first in her section in the 200 meter dash and fifth overall with a time of 24.26.

In the pentathlon, Taylor Frank set a new school record with 3,093 points. Frank previously competed (2,910 points) in the pentathlon at Dempsey Indoor on Jan. 31, but this time the junior broke Jessica Aguilera's record of 3,056 points.

Junior Tejera Dial broke Ana Valdovinos' school record in the one-mile run at the MPSF with a time of 5:06.95. The Bakersfield, Calif., native previously broke Valdovino's one-mile record which she set at the Husker Invitational with a time of 5:08.58. Freshman Arianna Fuentes also competed in the one-mile run and finished with a time of 5:15:34, which was good for 10th.

"It was our first time back at MPSF in many years and it was a great experience for our gals to see the level of competition," said head coach John Elders.

In the 4x400 meter relay a team comprised of Tigest Nealy, Ashley Sims, Brown, and Katie Wilson placed fourth with a time a 3:50.16.

Wilson also placed third in her heat in the 200-meter as she posted a time of 25.24. Senior Ashley Sims  competed in the 60-meter dash and finished second in her heat with a time of personal best time of 7.68. However, Sims had her best performance of the day in the 200-meter dash after posting a time of 24.75 while finishing in first place of her section.

All four Titans who competed in the 60-meter dash on Friday raced to a personal best time.

The Titans also saw junior Deena Pierce place second in her preliminary heat in the 60-meter hurdles with a personal best time of 8.72.

Off the track, weight thrower Amanda Mercado (pictured) finished second in the competition behind Utah's Ilse Kaaja as she tossed a personal best of 16.38m on Friday. Redshirt sophomore Alexandria Kemp also competed in the weight throw as she finished in ninth with a best of 14.80m. 

In the long jump, freshman Ty'Jalayah Robertson wrapped up the best Titan long jump of the day as she posted a best of 5.08m, while Brooke Hardge had a best of 4.99m. Robertson and Frank also had the best high jump for the Titans as they both jumped 1.58m.

Ifunanya Gwacham participated in the triple jump with a best of 11.21m to finish in fifth, while Jasmyne Davis jumped 11.04m, which was good for seventh.

"This meet was an eye-opener for the girls and now it has set a standard for next year to step up our level of competition, but overall it was a great effort"

The Titans finished 15th at the championship meet and will begin its outdoor portion of its schedule next week in Riverside, Calif. at the LBSU, Pepperdine, and Riverside CC meet.
