Titans Set to Host Fullerton Classic to Open 2018 Campaign

FULLERTON, Calif. --- Cal State Fullerton will open up the 2018 campaign by welcoming in Eastern Washington, Montana, Akron, UMass Lowell this Friday and Saturday inside Titan Gym. The Titans will kick things off by playing Akron, Friday at 2 pm PT, and then will take on UMass Lowell later that evening at 7:00 pm PT. Fullerton will conclude tournament play by taking on Montana, Saturday at 11:00 am PT.

TICKETS
Tickets for all Titans home games can be purchased online at fullertontitans.com, or at the Cal State Fullerton Athletics Ticket Office, located in the Titan House on campus off of Gymnasium Drive on the northeast side of Titan Gym. Game day sales and will call tickets will open an hour prior to the scheduled time at the specific venue. All Cal State Fullerton students with a school ID get free admission. Admission is FREE for ALL students.

TRENDING UP
Fourth year head coach Ashley Preston returns to helm of the Titan volleyball program with some positive momentum heading into the season. Fullerton looks to keep its win percentage climbing, as last year's 5-24 record was a five-game improvement from two years ago. The Titans return 10 letterwinners and seven starters from last year's squad.

AKRON NOTES
The Akron roster consists of 10 returners, led by seniors Abbey Pawlak (Sylvania, Ohio) and Kayla Gwozdz (Temperance, Mich.). Last season, Pawlak posted 187 digs and 29 service aces, while Gwozdz held team-bests of 290 kills and 317.5 points.

Also highlighting the returners is sophomore Taylor Sharrits (Concord, Ohio), who led the Zips defensively with 419 digs. Sophomore setter Emily Weigand (Burton, Ohio) returns after a freshman season where she led Akron with 992 assists and 36 service aces.

UMASS LOWELL NOTES
UMass Lowell finished 5-21 overall last year and 0-12 in AEC play. They are coached by Resa Provanzano and return Katherine Claybaugh who led the team in kills last season with 272. Friday morning also serves as the season opener for the River Hawks.

SERIES NOTES
Saturday will mark the sixth meeting between Montana and Cal State Fullerton. The Titans are 4-1, but Montana won most-recently, a 3-0 sweep in Lubbock, Texas, in 2013. The Grizzlies are 0-2 vs. CSUF in Fullerton, Calif.

MONTANA NOTES
Under the direction of second-year head coach, Allison Lawrence, Montana returns 11 letterwinners from a year ago and added five newcomers to complete its 2018 roster. Out of its returners, Montana returns all six of its starters, plus the libero. The Grizzlies finished last season with an 8-21 mark overall. 

YOUTH MOVEMENT
The Titans boast 12 newcomers, including four transfers and eight freshmen, helping to make up Fullerton's tallest squad in head coach Ashley Preston's fourth season in Orange County.

MAD FOR MADDIE
Senior Madeline Schneider is primed for a breakout season as she enters her third and final season as a Titan. She earned Big West Honorable Mention accolades a season ago, leading Fullerton in almost every offensive category, including kills with 335. That mark ranked 10th highest in the conference a year ago.


BLOCK PARTY
Senior middle blocker Summer Kerins, who led the Titans after leading the team in blocks last year with 70.
