Fullerton to Face UC Davis and Sacramento State

FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton women's tennis will attempt to bounce back as they take part in a busy week of traveling.

The Titans will look to remain undefeated in conference play as they take on UC Davis, Wednesday at 11 am PT a Fullerton will finish the week against Sacramento State, Thursday at 1 pm PT.

OPPONENTS AND HISTORY

March 28 | 11 am PT | Marya Welch Tennis Center | Davis, Calif.

UC Davis is 11-3 (4-1) overall for the season and sits in third place for the Big West. Davis rides a four-match win streak that began with taking down Cal Poly 4/3. The Aggies successfully beat out CSUN, and UC Riverside to continue their streak.

While at home, the Aggies are 4-1 for the season.

When the Titans and Aggies met last year, Fullerton swept Davis 4-0.  

March 29 | 1 pm PT | Sacramento State Courts | Sacramento, Calif.

In the Big Sky Conference, Sacramento State is 5-9 (4-2) overall. The Hornets currently ride a two-match win streak.

The Hornets improved to 4-2 in the BSC after defeating the Montana State Bobcats, 4-3 in the final match.

This will be the first time in over a decade that the teams will meet.

BIG WEST PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Freshman Genevieve Zeidan received the accolade for the week of 3/14. Zeidan's trio of wins elevated her to the top spot of the Fullerton leaderboards. Zeidan has improved her record since and now rides a 14-match win streak and is 15-1 overall in dual play.

Zeidan on being honored, "It feels great to be honored but it is even better that the program is being recognized for their efforts this season."

HOME SWEET HOME
This season has proved that at home, the Titans are unstoppable. At the Titan Tennis Courts,  Cal State Fullerton is 8-0.

SETTING A STREAK
Fullerton stands alone at the top of the Big West Conference standings at 14-2 (3-0) overall for the season. The Titans are on an eight-match win streak and have proved their perseverance after winning two close matches against Pacific (3/14) and Hawai'i (3/17). The Titans came back from behind to finish with a 4-3 win both times.

Cal State Fullerton's program record was an 11-match win streak that was set in 2017. The streak began in last year's season opener and ran until March 10, 2017 when Long Beach State snapped the streak with a 4-3 win over the Titans. 

CONFERENCE COMPETITION
Fullerton opened conference play with a dominant 6-1 win over UC Riverside on Feb. 3. The Titans capitalized and swept the doubles matches to earn the point to put the Titans in the lead and then proceeded to take five of the six singles matches.  The Titans continued their conference hot streak with a 4-0 win over CSUN on Feb. 16.

After the comeback win over Hawai'i (3/17) Fullerton advanced to 14-2 (3-0) for the season.

SISTER ACT
The Titans' season opener (1/18) marked the beginning of a new era for the Valenzuela sisters. Alexis Valenzuela returned to the courts as the new volunteer coach, while sister, Taylor, embarked on her first match as a Titan.

NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK
Cal State Fullerton welcomed five incoming freshmen for the 2017-18 campaign, Caisey Lee Emery, Jadie Acidera, Tiani Jadulang, Taylor Valenzuela and Genevieve Zeidan. The group was ranked the ninth-best incoming class among mid-majors according to TennisRecruiting.net.

IN THE RANKINGS
In the latest rankings released on March 21, Zeidan rounds at the list at No. 125.

Freshman Genevieve Zeidan continues to lead the charge for the Titans, she is currently a stellar 25-2 overall in singles play and 15-1 in dual match play. She is currently riding a phenomenal 14-match win streak. Zeidan spent four months in the rankings going from No.103 to No. 97.

FULLERTON'S DYNAMIC DUO
Sarah Nuno and Karla Portalatin are starting to come on strong for the Titans. The tandem is currently 19-4 overall in doubles play and 10-3 on court one in dual match action.

ABOUT DIANNE MATIAS
Matias enters her fifth year with the Titan Tennis program. She owns an overall coaching record of 75-54 and 68-39 mark while with Fullerton. She was named the Big West Conference Coach of the Year in 2016.
