Season Comes to a Close with Quarterfinal Loss

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – The 2014 Cal State Fullerton women's tennis season came to a close on Friday as the Titans dropped a Big West Championships quarterfinal match against No. 1 seed and 55th-ranked Long Beach State, 4-0, at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

 

Under first-year head coach Dianne Matias, the Titans close the year with a record of 8-15 after an eighth place finsih in the Big West standings with a league mark of 1-7.

 

Fullerton, the eighth seed at the Big West Championships, defeated No. 9 seed UC Riverside on Thursday in first round play, advancing to play the regular season champions in the quarterfinals as the 49ers recently clinched their 12th conference title.

 

Fullerton's No. 2 doubles team of Megan Sandford and Alexis Valenzuela scored an 8-4 victory over Long Beach State's Maeva Razakasoa and Hayley Thompson to even doubles action at 1-1.

 

But LBSU's top team of Laura Eales and Ebba Unden defeated the Titans' No. 1 duo of Camille De Leon and Morgan McIntosh, 8-6, to secure the doubles point and give the 49ers a 1-0 edge heading into singles action.

 

At the No. 3 spot in the lineup, Julie Gerard edged De Leon, 6-4, 6-0, before LBSU's Karolina Rozenberg defeated Kalika Slevcove, 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 4 spot to give the 49ers a 3-0 lead.

 

Long Beach State clinched it match-winning point as Thompson scored a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Sandford at the fifth spot in the order.

 

Fullerton holds an overall record of 17-35 dating back to 1989 at the Big West Championships, and the Titans have been the No. 8 seed 11 times with a record of 7-15 in those matches.
Fullerton has never advanced out of the quarterfinals with a record of 0-12.

 

The Titans hold a record of 5-2 against UC Riverside in the Big West Championships with the first meeting in 2005.

Against Long Beach State at the Big West Championships, Fullerton is 2-5 all-time including meeting the 49ers in the quarterfinals in 2010, 2011, and 2012 losing each of the three contests. Fullerton last defeated LBSU in 1993 in the qualifying (first) round.
