Big West Championship Begins Sunday in Riverside

THIS WEEK: Cal State Fullerton wraps up the 2016-17 season this weekend when the Titans head to the 2017 Big West Conference Women's Golf Championship at Oak Quarry Golf Course in Riverside, Calif.

THE COURSE: The conference championship is a three-day, 54-hole tournament with 18 holes played each day on the par 72, 6,141-yard course.  First round of day one is slated to tee off with Cal Poly and UC Davis at 7:30 a.m. Admission is free.

LIVE STATS: Fans can follow the action from the Big West Conference Championship through GolfStat.com. Links for the live stats as well as complete results following the conclusion of each day will be available at FullertonTitans.com.

SUMMING UP THIS YEAR'S FIELD: Host UC Riverside enters the tournament as the defending champion after capturing the team's first-ever title back in 2016.  At last year's championship, the Highlanders entered the final round three-strokes back in second place, but fired a blistering, third-round score of 296, a tournament low, to overtake Cal Poly to claim the 2016 Big West Women's Golf Championship team title at The Bay Course in Kapalua, Hawai'i.  The Highlanders' efforts earned the program their first-ever women's golf conference title while dethroning UC Davis, who won the previous six championships, in the process.

Keep an eye out on UC Irvine, who has finished top-five in five tournaments this season, and is coming off a team title at the Wyoming Cowgirl Invitational.  The Anteaters placed three players in the top 10 to help secure the program's 17th tournament win in program history and the first since the Anteaters won the Fresno State Lexus Classic at the Copper River Country Club on Feb. 24, 2009.

The Mustangs of Cal Poly are also coming off of a first place victory at their final event of the regular season, the Bobcat Desert Invitational. This marked the third team title of the season for the Mustangs, who were also victorious at the Hobble Creek Fall Classic, to kick off the 2016-17 season, and Battle of the Rock at the Oak Quarry Golf Club, which featured seven Big West opponents and is the location for this year's Big West Women's Golf Championship.

UC Davis may not have captured any top-three finishes this season but don't count the Aggies out at making a run for the title. UCD enters the championship as the top seed and has won six of the last seven team titles.  The Aggies are led by senior Paige Lee, who sits third in the league with a 73.8 stroke average.

EDBERG NAMED GOLFER OF THE MONTH: Cal State Fullerton senior Martina Edberg extended her conference record of consecutive Big West Golfer of the Month selections to five when the coaches voted her the winner for April. It was Edberg's seventh career honor, placing her second on the all-time Big West career list.
Edberg secured her fifth medalist honor of 2016-17 as she won the Hawkeye El-Tigre Invitational in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
She fired her top round of 70 over the final 18 holes, allowing her to come back from two shots behind and win with an overall 2-under-par 214.  Edberg carded back-to-back rounds of 72 to stay in contention.
Edberg, who has posted a top-3 finish in eight of nine tournaments this season, helped the Titans move up four spots on the leaderboard to tie for fifth in the 14-team field on the 6,085-yard El-Tigre Golf Club.
She currently leads the Titans with a 71.54 scoring average in 26 rounds this season and is ranked 35th in the country by Golfweek.

TITANS HISTORY AT THE BIG WEST CHAMPIONSHIPS: This year marks the Titans eighth attempt at the conference title since the program was reinstated for the 2009-10 season. Fullerton has finished seventh five times, including the last two year. The Titans recorded their best finish in the 2011-12 season when they finished in third place with a 22-over 920 at the San Luis Obispo Country Club. Edberg is the only Titans player to win the individual conference title, doing so as a freshman in 2013-14. She finished with a 2-under 217 at the San Luis Obispo CC.
