Fullerton Splits Doubleheader on Final Day of Tina Finali Tournament

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton women's water polo split its doubleheader, losing to CBU in game one before defeating Ottawa Arizona in game two Saturday at the Tina Finali Memorial Tournament. The Titans are now 6-9 on the season. 

Cal State Fullerton 6, California Baptist 9
The Titans dropped its first game of the doubleheader to CBU by a final score of 9-6. Fullerton hung in tough throughout the game against a strong Lancers team. 

After falling behind 2-0 early in the game, Gabrielle Zaretskiy scored to get the Titans back in the game. With the team trailing by three late in the first half, Keiran Scout Bates put one in the back of the net to make it a 6-4 game at halftime. 

The two teams went back and forth in the second half as the Titans were unable to get enough stops on the defensive end to cut into CBU's lead. 

Cal State Fullerton 12, Ottawa 9
The two teams exchanged goals in the first quarter, ending in a 2-2 tie before the Titans rattled off three unanswered goals to take a 5-3 lead. Ottawa scored just before the end of the first half to make it a 5-3 game at halftime. 

The second half started much like the first, with the two teams scoring back-and-forth. Midway through the fourth quarter Gabrielle Zaretskiy and Amricul Mendoza scored goals 30 seconds apart to put the Titans up by three, 11-8.

Ottawa cut into the Titans lead with just under three minutes remaining before Delaney Wilder hit a shot to regain the Titans three point lead that they would not surrender. 

Wilder led the team with four goals on six shots while Mendoza added three goals on five shots. 

Fullerton is back in action Friday, Mar. 3 against Cal Lutheran and Santa Clara on day one of the Claremont Convergence.
