Titans Drop Match at CSUN in Straight Sets

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — The Cal State Fullerton women's volleyball team dropped a road contest to CSUN Saturday night, falling in straight sets to the Matadors. 

Danielle Jefferies paced the Titans with nine kills on a .200 clip, adding two digs and a block on the night. Lolo Fonua followed with seven kills, two digs and a block, while Lyla traylor added six kills and 12 digs. Liz Schuster tallied 19 assists, 12 digs, three kills and an ace while Nadia Koanui contributed 10 digs and seven assists for the Titans.

After falling behind 2-0 in the match, the Titans nearly came away with set three to avoid the sweep, going up 24-23 following a Traylor kill and Jefferies solo block. But the Matadores prevailed, finishing the match on a 4-1 run. As a team, Cal State Fullerton hit at a .090 clip to CSUN's .288 hitting percentage. 

CSUN got out to a quick start in set one, taking a 10-2 advantage before kills from Traylor and Fonua brought the score to 10-5. Teams then traded points, with a McClure kill and a block by Jefferies and McClure brought the Titans within six, 15-9. But the Matadors finished the set strong, using a 10-6 run to take the 25-15 set one win. 

The Matadors once again got out to a hot start in the second set, taking a 10-3 lead. Kills from Traylor, Jefferies and Robinson brought the Titans back within five, 11-6, before CSUN extended its lead to nine, 17-8, forcing a Titan timeout. Fullerton scored four straight out of the break, but the Matadors went on to take set two, 25-14. 

In the third set, Cal State Fullerton jumped out to a 7-3 lead following a Jefferies kill and ace by Schuster, capping a 6-0 run. CSUN fought back to tie things up at nine before kills from Fonua and Martinez put the Titans back on top. Teams then traded points, with another kill by Jefferies bringing the Titans within one, 17-16. CSUN scored three straight to go up four, 20-16, but a 4-0 Titan run capped by a McClure service ace tied things back up at 20. 

Teams then traded points again, as a kill by Traylor and a solo stuff by Jefferies brought the Titans to set point, 24-23. But the Matadors ultimately prevailed, scoring four of the next five to take the set, 27-25, and complete the sweep. 

Up next, the Titans return to Titan Gym for a four-game homestand to finish the regular season. Cal State Fullerton will take on UC Irvine on Friday, November 18th, at 7:00 p.m. PT.
