Women’s Volleyball Swept by Hawaii

FULLERTON, Calif. — Cal State Fullerton women's volleyball fell in straight sets to Hawaii Friday night at Titan Gym. 

Lyla Traylor led the Titan attack with nine kills to go along with four digs, while Danille Jefferies added eight kills on a .438 clip and one block. Lolo Fonua had five kills and seven digs and Julia Crawford added three kills for the Titans. 

As a team, the Titans recorded 28 kills on 98 attacks to Hawaii's 45 kills on 110 attacks. The Rainbow Wahine tallied a .318 hitting percentage on the match to the Titans' .133. 

Cal State Fullerton came out strong to start the match, with kills from Fonua and Traylor giving the Titans an early 6-4 advantage. The Titans extended their lead to four, 10-6, on another Traylor kill and three from Jefferies. A 4-0 Hawaii run later tied the set at 11. The set remained close, as Fonua tallied another kill to bring the score to 16-15 for Hawaii, but the Rainbow Wahineended the set on a 9-3 run to take a 1-0 match lead. 

Hawaii opened the second set on a 4-1 run before a block from Jefferies and Schuster and a kill from Bianca Martinez brought Cal State Fullerton within one, 7-6. Martinez tallied another kill, but a 5-0 Hawaii run put the Titans in a 13-8 hole. Hawaii scored six of the next nine to go up 19-11. A Jefferies kill narrowed the Titans' deficit, but a 4-0 Hawaii run then gave the Rainbow Wahine a 23-12 lead. A Jefferies kill sparked a 3-0 Titans run to bring the score to 23-15, but Hawaii went on to seal the 25-17 set win. 

A kill down the line by Fonua brought the score to 6-5 for Hawaii early in the third set. The Rainbow Wahine, however, proceeded to use a 10-0 run to go up 16-5. The Titans hung around, scoring four in a row to narrow their deficit to eight, 19-11. Hawaii then went on to seal the set win, 25-13, and the 3-0 match sweep. 

The Titans remain at home next weekend with matches against CSUN on Friday, October 7th, and UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, October 8th. First serve versus CSUN is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. PT.
