Titans Open Conference Play with Sweep Over CSU Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The Cal State women's volleyball team hit at a season-best .421 clip en route to a conference-opening sweep over CSU Bakersfield on the road Friday night, extending its winning streak to six. 

Lyla Traylor led all hitters with 10 kills on the match to go along with five digs, a pair of blocks and an ace. Julia Crawford added nine blocks, four digs and two service aces, while Marisse Turner had seven kills and a match-high three blocks. Bianca Martinez and Danielle Jefferies each tallied five kills and two blocks while Elizabeth Schuster dished out a match-high 31 assists. 

As a team, the Titans racked up 10 blocks and nine aces while holding the Roadrunners to a .049 hitting percentage. 

Both teams traded points early in the first set until an ace from Dominique Velarde and a Traylor kill put the Titans up 13-10. The Titans extended their lead to five, 19-14, following kills from Turner and Traylor and a Malie McClure ace. A dump kill from Schuster and another Traylor kill then gave the Titans set one, 25-17. 

The Titans got off to a quick start in the second set, as kills by Martinez and Traylor and a block from Martinez and Jefferies gave the team an 8-1 lead. The Titans maintained their dominance throughout the set, tallying seven blocks in the period and holding CSU Bakersfield to a -.242 hitting percentage. An ace from Nadia Koanui and a Jefferies kill sealed the dominant 25-10 set win for the Titans. 

The third set remained close early, as a Jefferies kill tied the game at 13. The Titans, however, proceeded to go on a 8-1 run with kills from Traylor, Crawford and Turner to take a 21-14 lead. Another kill from Crawford and a pair of aces by Velarde sealed the 25-15 set win and 3-0 sweep for the Titans. 

Next up, the Titans travel to San Luis Obispo to take on Cal Poly tomorrow, Saturday, September 24th. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. PT.
