FULLERTON, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton will kick off Big West action on the road against UC Riverside. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. in SRC Arena.
The Titans closed out their non-conference schedule at the UCR Classic this past weekend falling in five sets to Seattle, but picking up a reverse sweep over Pennsylvania. Savahna Costello was named the All-Tournament libero and Makenzi Abelman earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team helping Fullerton to their 1-1 record over the weekend.
Fullerton finished their non-conference schedule with an 8-3 record, their best mark since the 2010 season. Now, the Titans will look to continue their 2019 success taking on the Highlanders to start their conference schedule.
Freshman Julia Crawford continues to lead the offensive side of the net with 159 kills (4.08 per set) while Costello leads the defensive side ranking in the NCAA top 10 in digs per set and top 25 in total digs. Not to be forgotten is senior outside hitter Felicia Marshall who ranks second on the team with 99 kills thus far. Abelman has been crucial over the last couple weekends filling in for an injured Elizabeth Schuster posting three consecutive 40-plus assists in her last three matches.
On the season, UCR is 4-7 after dropping both of their matches this past weekend against Seattle and Penn. The Highlanders are currently led by a pair of freshman, Ashley Dittman and Amarachi Osuji, who have 141 and 128 points respectively. Dittman has gotten the higher workload with 127 kills in 398 attempts while Osuji has posted the higher hit percentage at 20.2% (118-for-317).
In the history of the two programs, Fullerton leads the all-time series 30-10 but Riverside won both matches between the two teams last year and have taken six of the last eight. The Titans are 12-7 all-time against the Highlanders in SRC Arena.
