FULLERTON, Calif. – Despite the defeat, the Titans put on an inspiring performance in their season opener, as they rallied from two sets down to nearly take down Akron. Unfortunately the Zips managed to hang on to defeat Fullerton 3-2 (25-15, 25-17, 17-25, 16-25, 15-13) Friday afternoon inside Titan Gym.
Madeline Schneider announced the start of her senior campaign in a big way, as she racked up a match-high 20 kills on a .333 attack percentage to go along with four digs. The 20 kills was just six shy of her career high. Tyler Fezzey also had a coming out party of her own, producing a career-best 14 kills to go along with six digs. She also recorded a block and four block assists.
Felicia Marshall nearly had herself a double-double in her Fullerton debut, producing nine kills and 15 digs, while Savahna Costello led the Titans in overall digs with 25.
It was a slow start for the Titans, as they were handily defeated in the first two sets, but with their backs up against the wall, the young squad came through in a big way.
Thanks to a .441 third set attack percentage and a stellar 83 percent sideout clip, the Titans cruised to a 25-17 third set win to stay alive.
Fullerton took that momentum and rode it into the fourth, where the stellar play continued en route to a 25-16 victory.
The Titans nearly finished the deal in the fifth and deciding set as they at one point held a 10-5 advantage, but Akron rallied to claim a 15-13 victory in the set to clinch the match.
Fullerton aims to rebound tonight vs. UMass Lowell at 7 pm PT inside Titan Gym.
