Fullerton Battles Back but Falls in Five to San Jose State

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Sophomore Shimen Fayad led the Cal State Fullerton women's volleyball team with a team-high 14 kills, but it was not enough as the Titans lost 3-2 (25-17,22-25,25-12, 19-25, 15-11) to San Jose State on Friday night as part of the SDSU/USD California Mixer at Jenny Craig Pavilion.

Fullerton (5-7) dropped the first and third sets, only to battle back each time with wins in the second and fourth, respectively. But in the fifth and final game, San Jose State (7-4) built a quick 7-2 lead as the Titans made three early attack errors. CSF was able to tie the game at 10-10 following a SJSU error, but the Spartans scored their next five points with three kills and two Titan miscues.

Fayad recorded her team-leading eighth double-double of the year with 14 kills and 16 digs, while sophomore Summer Kerins added 12 kills and three blocks. Freshman Rachel Hall led the offense with 43 assists, while fellow rookie Madisen Babich totaled 24 digs. Sophomore Kyra Smith added four solo blocks.

The Titans were held to a .075 attacking percentage, while the Spartans were held to a clip of .153.

Nandyala Gama led SJSU with 14 kills and a whopping 13 block assists as the Spartans totaled 19 team blocks. Gama was one of three Spartans to post a double-double as Hana Tresnakova added 13 kills and 10 digs, followed by Breann Robinson's 42 assists and 15 digs.

The Titans return to action with two games on Saturday, playing 10th-ranked San Diego at 10 a.m., at Jenny Craig Pavilion followed by a 7 p.m. match against San Diego State at Aztec Court to conclude the SDSU/USD California Mixer.

Notes: Cal State Fullerton is 1-1 in five-set matches in 2016.
