Titans Fall to New Mexico, Santa Clara at Lobo Classic

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Cal State Fullerton suffered consecutive sweeps to New Mexico and Santa Clara in the final day of the Lobo Classic Saturday at the Johnson Center in Albuquerque, N.M.

New Mexico 3, Cal State Fullerton 0 (Box Score)

Mackenzie Olsen flirted with a double-double but it was not enough as the Titans suffered a 25-20, 25-14, 25-13 sweep at the hands of the host Lobos in Fullerton's first match of the day.

Olsen dished out 23 assists and added eight digs, which tied for the team lead with Paige Reed. Summer Kerins led the team with seven kills and Katelyn Nielsen added five.

The first set was the closest of the match as the teams were tied eight times in the frame and exchanged the lead on three occasions. The Titans hit a match-best .292 (10-3-24) in the first set and freshman Megann Delgado tallied all four of her kills in the opening set.

The Titans trailed 14-13 after a kill from Olsen before the Lobos scored seven of the next 10 points to pad the lead to 21-16. The Titans fought back, scoring three straight to make it 21-19 but the Lobos got a pair of aces from Julia Warren after a Fullerton attacking error to give the Lobos five set points. Delgado smacked a kill to erase one set point but Simone Henderson smashed down a kill to wrap up the set for the Lobos.

Henderson finished with nine kills without an error while Warren added seven with seven digs for the Lobos. Devanne Sours led New Mexico with 12 kills.

Following the first set, the Titans could not get anything rolling as the Lobos led wire-to-wire in the second set to put Fullerton on the brink. The third set was close early before a 7-2 run by the Lobos turned a 10-9 game into a 17-11 lead. The Lobos then finished with an 8-2 flurry to close out the match.

Santa Clara 3, Cal State Fullerton 0 (Box Score)

The Titans did not fare much better in their second match of the day, falling in straight sets to Santa Clara 25-12, 25-11, 25-17.

The first set featured seven tied and four lead changes, all in the early going as the teams were tied 7-7. But the Broncos unleashed an 18-5 run to close out the set and take a 1-0 lead.

The Broncos continued to roll in the second set, jumping out to an 11-1 advantage en route to a 14-point win in the set, holding the Titans to their lowest score in a set this season.

The Titans will continue their month-long road trip next weekend at the Fresno State Invitational.
