No. 13 Waves Too Much for Titans

Malibu, Calif. - Pepperdine's Taylor Racich had 17 kills, hit .438 and had five blocks to lead the 13th-ranked Waves to a three-set victory over visiting Cal State Fullerton Saturday afternoon in the Pepperdine Asics Tournament in the Firestone Fieldhouse.

Fullerton, for the second day in a row in Malibu, finished the match without winning a set, falling 20-25, 23-25, 20-25. The Titans are now 2-3 heading into tomorrow night's home opener against visiting Sacred Heart at 5 p.m.

Pepperdine, 3-1, has now beaten the Titans three straight times and has a 9-2 advantage in the all-time series since 1980.

Racich, Jazmine Orozco (13 kills, .265) and Victoria Adelhelm (10 kills, .714) powered the Waves' offense that hit .281 as a team to Fullerton's .143. The Titans were led by Bre Moreland, who collected 17 kills in 47 swings. Kayla Neto logged her first double-double of the year with a 10-kill, 10 dig performance.

The Titans mounted numerous comebacks on the afternoon, and almost stayed alive in the final frame after falling behind 7-1 to start and eventually 21-12 late in the set. Fullerton scored seven unanswered points with kills from Moreland, Leah Best and Lauren Kissell and a service ace from setter Julie Consani that got them to 21-19 but that would be as close as they would get. Racich had six of her 17 kills in he third set alone.

Pepperdine led wire to wire in the first set and Fullerton had a as much as a four-point edge at 20-16 in the second set before the Waves crashed and put up nine point over the last 14 exchanges.
