LBSU Snaps Fullerton Win Streak

FULLERTON, Calif. --- Cal State Fullerton's season-opening 11-match win streak was snapped in a narrow 4-3 loss to Long Beach State on Friday afternoon at Titan Tennis Courts.

The Titans (11-1, 2-1 BWC) suffered their first defeat of the season, while the 49ers improved 8-2 overall and 4-1 in the Big West Conference.

For the 11th time this year, Cal State Fullerton clinched the doubles point as Sarah Nuno and Karla Portalatin defeated Laura Eales and Lena Pacholski, 6-3, at No. 2 doubles before Masako Makiba and Danielle Pham held off Maren Helgo and Natalia Munoz, 6-3 at No. 3 in the order.

Nuno and Portalatin are now 10-1 on the season and on a seven-match win streak.
Trailing 1-0, Munoz evened the match for LBSU with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Makiba at No. 5 singles.
At No. 2 in the lineup, Julie Gerard gave the 49ers a 2-1 lead, defeating Camille De Leon, 6-3, 6-2.
Maeva Razakasoa dealt Alexis Valenzuela her first loss of the season, 6-4, 6-1, at the top of the lineup, to put the 49ers ahead 3-1.
Pham, now 9-3 on the season, brought the Titans back within one, 3-2, using three sets to move past Eales, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, at the bottom of the order.
Portalatin evened the match for Fullerton, 3-3, with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 victory over Helgo at No. 3 in the order. The native of Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic is now 9-2 on the year.
Pacholski's (LBSU) come-from-behind 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, 6-3 victory over Sarah Nuno clinched the match for Long Beach State. The loss ended a nine-match singles win streak for the Nuno.
 
Cal State Fullerton's match vs. UTEP on Sunday was canceled. The Titans will next play Pacific at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 18 at Titan Tennis Courts.

Notes: Cal State Fullerton's program record 11-match win streak was snapped…the Titans have lost 23 consecutive matches to Long Beach State dating back to 2000…Alexis Valenzuela and Sarah Nuno each had nine-match singles win streaks snapped.
