SANTA CLARA --- Three victories at the bottom of the lineup spurred Cal State Fullerton to a 4-0 victory over Santa Clara at Degheri Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.
The match's start time was delayed two hours, and the teams played until the winning point was clinched due to rain in the area.
The Titans are now 6-0 and off to their best start in program history, while the Broncos (1-1) suffered their first loss of the year.
For the fifth time this season, Cal State Fullerton started the match with a 1-0 advantage after winning the doubles point.
Sophomore Masako Makiba and junior Danielle Pham defeated Santa Clara's Caitlyn Frankel and Elizabeth Stephens, 6-2, at No. 3 doubles to record the first win for the Titans, before sophomores Sarah Nuno and Karla Portalatin clinched the point with a 6-2 victory over Nabila Farah and Zeina El Tawil. Both Titan doubles teams are 4-1 on the year, respectively.
Pham put Fullerton ahead 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles over Caraline Patterson.
The third point was captured by Nuno, who defeated El Tawil, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 4 in the order.
Makiba captured the fourth and winning point by edging Frankel, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 5 in the lineup.
After a four-match road swing, the Titans return home on Saturday, Feb. 11, to host UC Riverside at Titan Tennis Courts in their Big West Conference opener.
Notes: Cal State Fullerton has started the season 6-0 for the first time in program history…dating back to 2000, this is Fullerton's first win over Santa Clara in seven tries…Cal State Fullerton has not lost the doubles point in 2017.
