FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton women's tennis team suffered its first loss in Big West Conference play this season as visiting UC Santa Barbara scored a 5-2 victory at Titan Tennis Courts on Sunday afternoon.
With just one match remaining in the regular season, the Titans and Gauchos are tied for second in the Big West standings with identical 6-1 league records, while Long Beach State leads the league with a 7-0 mark.
Cal State Fullerton (17-4, 6-1 BWC) will conclude regular season play traveling to LBSU on Friday.
Fullerton's No. 1 doubles team of Camille De Leon and Alexis Valenzuela scored an upset over the 15th-ranked UCSB No. 1 pair of Paulina Dubavets and Stefani Stojic, 6-1. De Leon and Valenzuela have now won six matches in a row and are 13-1 on the season.
Unfortunately despite two tightly-contested doubles matches, the Titans were unable to come up with the doubles point as the Gauchos scored wins at No. 2 and No. 3.
Melissa Baker and Stephanie Yamada defeated Masako Makiba and Karla Portalatin 7-6 (2), at No. 2 in the order, while Lou Adler and Amanda Atanasson edged Sarah Nuno and Danielle Pham, 7-6 (5) at No. 3.
In singles play, Fullerton was only able to score two victories as Valenzuela defeated Adler, 6-2, 6-1 at the top of the order, while De Leon used three sets to dispatch Jaimee Gilbertson, 6-3, 1-6, 6-1.
On a team-leading seven-match winning streak, Valenzuela is now 16-3 on the season at the top of the lineup, while De Leon has won four in a row and is 16-5 on the year.
The loss snapped a four-match winning streak for the Titans, and extended Fullerton's 17-match losing streak to UCSB (dating back to 2000).
