FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton women's tennis team set another record with a 4-0 victory over Cal Poly on Saturday afternoon at Titan Tennis Courts.
The Titans' (17-3, 6-0 BWC) sixth league win is the most for the program in its history as Fullerton will play its home finale at 11 a.m., Sunday, against UC Santa Barbara at Titan Tennis Courts. Fullerton will end the regular season on Friday at Long Beach State before the Big West Championship at the end of the month.
Cal State Fullerton is currently second in the Big West Conference standings behind Long Beach State (14-4, 7-0) and just ahead of the Gauchos (11-7, 4-1 BWC).
Due to the rainy Southern California weather conditions, the Titans and Mustangs (3-12, 1-5 BWC) began the match with singles play.
Junior co-captain Camille De Leon put Cal State Fullerton in the lead with a quick, 6-1, 6-0, victory over Abigail Bacharach at No. 4 in the lineup. De Leon has now won three in a row and is 15-5 on the year.
The Titan lead increased to 2-0 as freshman Sarah Nuno, now 13-7 on the year, defeated Bryn Bacharach, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 2 in the lineup.
Junior co-captain Alexis Valenzuela earned her 15th singles win of the year and gave Fullerton a 3-0 advantage with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Zoe Oedekerk at the top of the order. Valenzuela has won six consecutive singles matches.
Increasing her team-leading win streak to eight matches, freshman Karla Portalatin clinched the match-winning point with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Ilana Oleynik at No. 3 in the lineup. Portalatin also leads the Titans with 16 singles wins in 2016.
The Titans play their final home match vs. UC Santa Barbara at 11 a.m., Sunday, and Fullerton concludes the regular season at Long Beach State on Friday.
