Titans Make History with 6-1 Victory over UC Irvine

FULLERTON, Calif.  – History was made at Titan Tennis Courts on Saturday as Cal State Fullerton produced a 6-1 victory over UC Irvine and set the program record for wins in a single-season.

 

The Titans are now 16-3 in the regular season with three matches remaining before the Big West Championship.

 

In addition, Cal State Fullerton is an undefeated 5-0 in Big West play, second in the league standings trailing  Long Beach State (13-4, 6-0 BWC).

 

The Titans' win against the Anteaters also snapped a 20-match losing streak to UC Irvine (3-13, 1-3 BWC) which dated back to 1998.

 

For the 15th time this season, Cal State Fullerton won the doubles point to claim a 1-0 lead.

 

Camille De Leon and Alexis Valenzuela defeated Andrea Duva and Vivien Dvali, 6-0, at the top of the doubles order to extend their winning streak to five matches as well as improve their overall record to 12-1.

 

The No. 3 doubles team of sophomore Danielle Pham and freshman Sarah Nuno clinched the point for Fullerton with a 7-5 victory over Sarah Gong and Ashlynn Hall.

 

In singles action, Pham put Fullerton ahead 2-0 as she overpowered Duva, 6-1, 6-0 at the bottom of the order. The Irvine native is on a three-match win streak with a 13-4 singles record.

 

Valenzuela pushed Fullerton's lead to 3-0 as she moved past Gong, 6-0, 6-3, at the top of the order. The West Covina, Calif., native is on a five-match win streak with a 14-3 singles record.

 

Fullerton suffered a loss at No.2 singles as UCI closed, 3-1, but freshman Masako Makiba clinched the match-winning fourth point with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Mazy Watrous at No. 5 in the order.

 

At No. 4 in the lineup, De Leon came from behind to defeat Stephanie Hazell, 5-7, 6-0, 6-0, as the co-captain is now 14-5 in singles action.

 

Fullerton's sixth and final point came from freshman Karla Portalatin's marathon, 6-3, 4-6, 11-9, victory over Taylor LeFridge at No. 3 in the singles lineup. The rookie is on a team-leading seven-match win streak and boasts a 15-4 record.

 

The Titans will play their final two home matches of the year next week, hosting Cal Poly at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 9 No. 65 UC Santa Barbara at 11 a.m., Sunday, April 10.

 

Fullerton concludes the regular season at Long Beach State on Friday, April 15.
